SUNDAY, FEBRUARY 27th
Eighth Sunday after the Epiphany
COLOR: GREEN
ISAIAH 49:8-16a
(The Message)
God calls a people in exile to come
home, a people in shadows to come
out from hiding.
God has not forgotten them.
8 God also says:
"When the time's ripe, I answer
you. When victory's due, I help you. I
form you and use you to reconnect the
people with me, To put the land in order, to
resettle families on the ruined properties.9 I tell prisoners, 'Come on out. You're free!'
and those huddled in fear, 'It's all right. It's
safe now.' There'll be food stands along all
the roads, picnics on all the hills -
10 Nobody hungry, nobody thirsty, shade
from the sun, shelter from the wind, For the
Compassionate One guides them, takes
them to the best springs.
11 I'll make all my mountains into roads,
turn theminto a superhighway.
12 Look: These coming from far countries,
and those, out of the north, These
streaming in from the west, and those from
all the way down the Nile!"
13 Heavens, raise the roof! Earth, wake
the dead! Mountains, send up cheers!
God has comforted his people. He has
tenderly nursed his beaten-up,
beaten-down people.
14 But Zion said, "I don't get it. God has
left me. My Master has forgotten I even
exist."
15 "Can a mother forget the infant at her
breast, walk away from the baby she bore?
But even if mothers forget, I'd never forget
you - never.
16 Look, I've written your names on the
backs of my hands. The walls you're rebuilding are never out of
my sight.

PSALM 131 (UMH 787)
(The Message)1 God, I'm not trying to rule
the roost, I don't want to be king of the
mountain. I haven't meddled where I have
no business or fantasized grandiose plans.
2 I've kept my feet on the ground, I've
cultivated a quiet heart. Like a baby
content in its mother's arms, my soul is a
baby content.
3 Wait, Israel, for God. Wait with hope.
Hope now; hope always!

I CORINTHIANS 4:1-5
(The Message)
Corinth had a problem with divisions
based on allegiances to past or present
leaders. Paul reminds the Christians in
Corinth that it's not their call to which
of their chief leaders is better than
another. God judges and commends.
Paul makes a comment about himself,
an apostle, and essentially a founding
pastor of the Christian community in
Corinth. "I am a steward (household
manager) of the mysteries of God." In
a Greco-Roman household, the steward
managed the books, supplies and up
keep for the household.1 Don't imagine us leaders to be something
we aren't. We are servants of Christ, not his
masters. We are guides into God's most
sublime secrets, not security guards posted
to protect them.
2 The requirements for a good guide are
reliability and accurate knowledge.
3 It matters very little to me what you think
of me, even less where I rank in popular
opinion. I don't even rank myself.
Comparisons in these matters are pointless.
4 I'm not aware of anything that would
disqualify me from being a good guide for
you, but that doesn't mean much. The
Master makes that judgment.
5 So don't get ahead of the Master and
jump to conclusions with your judgments
before all the evidence is in. When he
comes, he will bring out in the open and
place in evidence all kinds of things we
never even dreamed of; inner motives and
purposes and prayers. Only then will any
one of us get to hear the "Well done!" of
God.

MATTHEW 6:24-34
(The Message)
Jesus reminds everyone that they
cannot serve both God and the power
of wealth and that those who serve in
God's reign need not worry them-
selves about their basic needs or
tomorrow. Put God's kingdom first, and
everything necessary will come as well.
24 "You can't worship two gods at once.
Loving one god, you'll end up hating the
other. Adoration of one feeds contempt
feeds contempt for the other. You can't
worship God and Money both.
25 "If you decide for God, living a life of
God-worship, it follows that you don't fuss
about what's on the table at mealtimes or
whether the clothes in your closet are in
fashion. There is far more to your life than
the food you put in your stomach, more to
your outer appearance than the clothes
you hang on your body.
26 Look at the birds, free and unfettered, not tied down to a job description, careless
in the are of God. And you count far more
to him than birds.
27 "Has anyone by fussing in front of the
mirror ever gotten taller by so much as an
inch?
28 All this time and money wasted on
fashion - do you think it makes that much
difference?
Instead of looking at the fashions, walk
out into the fields and look at the wild
flowers. They never primp or shop,
29 but have you ever seen color and design
quite like it? The ten best-dressed men and
women in the country look shabby along
side them.
30 "If God gives such attention to the
appearance of wildflowers - most of which are
never even seen - don't you think he'll attend
to you, take pride in you, do his best for you?
31 What I'm trying to do here is to get you to
relax, to not be so preoccupied with getting,
so you can respond to God's giving.
32 People who don't know God and the way
he works fuss over these things, but you know
both God and how he works.
33 Steep your life in God-reality, God-initiative,
God-provisions. Don't worry about missing out.
You'll find all your everyday human concerns
will be met.
34 "Give your entire attention to what God is
doing right now, and don't get worked up about
what may or may not happen tomorrow. God
will help you deal with whatever hard things
come up when the time comes.
