be too quick to judge.
There may be perfectly angelic beings who turn out
to be nasty witches — and —
there may be strange, frightening creatures that
turn
out to be very good friends.
Don't judge too quickly.
You know what I'm talkin' about.

SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 1ST —
ALL SAINTS DAY
DAYLIGHT SAVINGS TIME ENDS

Here's a nice "Time Change" song for today.Twenty-Second Sunday after Pentecost
COLOR: Green
Holy Communion today.SCRIPTURE READINGS:
RUTH 1:1-18
New International Version (NIV)
Elimelech and Naomi and her sons had moved
to Moab
from Bethlehem to escape a famine.
Elimelech died.
After the two sons married Moabite
women, they died
as well, leaving no children.
The three women (their mother and wives) had
no
support in Moab. Naomi starts for home in Bethlehem, but begs her
daughters-in-law to stay in their own land.
Orpah
decides to stay with her own people.
Ruth follows
Naomi and pledges to join her people and
her
religion.
When Naomi was about to leave,
RUTH SAID:
“Where you go, I will go;
Where you lodge, I will lodge;

Your people shall be my people
and
your God my God.
Where you die, I will die.
There I will be buried.

May the Lord do thus and so to me

And more as well
If death parts me from you!”’
So the two women returned to Bethlehem in time
for
the autumn harvest of barley.
The story of Ruth is set in the period of the
Judges
before the birth of King David, but it was
certainly
written much later, when the two tribes
of Judah were
set free from their captivity in Babylon
and allowed to
return to Jerusalem. Naomi and her
family suffered
great misfortune in a foreign land.
Ruth, a girl from
that foreign land, decided to migrate
with Naomi to
Bethlehem. They arrived in time for the
barley harvest.
Ruth was poor, a foreigner, and a
woman, and all this
counted against her, but she was
helped by the older
woman to overcome the
difficulties she faced. She had
the good sense
to listen to the advice given to her by
Naomi,
and the older woman was rewarded by
Ruth's
unfaltering loyalty.

NAOMI AND RUTH
1 In the days when the judges ruled, there was a famine
in the land, and a man from Bethlehem in Judah, together
with his wife and two sons, went to live for a while in the
country of Moab.
2 The man's name was Elimelech, his wife's name Naomi,
and the names of his two sons were Mahlon and Kilion.
They were Ephrathites from Bethlehem, Judah. And they
went to Moab and lived there.
3 Now Elimelech, Naomi's husband, died, and she was
left with her two sons.
4 They married Moabite women, one named Orpah and
the other Ruth. After they had lived there about ten years,
5 both Mahlon and Kilion also died, and Naomi was left
without her two sons and her husband.
6 When she heard in Moab that the LORD had come to
the aid of his people by providing food for them, Naomi
and her daughters-in-law prepared to return home from
there.
7 With her two daughters-in-law she left the place where
she had been living and set out on the road that would
take them back to the land of Judah.
8 Then Naomi said to her two daughters-in-law, "Go back,
each of you, to your mother's home. May the LORD show
kindness to you, as you have shown to your dead and me.
9 May the LORD grant that each of you will find rest in the
home of another husband." Then she kissed them and
they wept aloud and
10 said to her, "We will go back with you to your people."
11 But Naomi said, "Return home, my daughters. Why
would you come with me? Am I going to have any more
sons, who could become your husbands?
12 Return home, my daughters; I am too old to have
another husband. Even if I thought there was still hope
for me—even if I had a husband tonight and then gave
birth to sons-
13 could you wait until they grew up? Would you remain
unmarried for them? No, my daughters. It is more bitter
for me than for you, because the LORD's hand has gone
out against me!"
14 At this they wept again. Then Orpah kissed her
mother-in-law good-by, but Ruth clung to her.
15 "Look," said Naomi, "your sister-in-law is going back
to her people and her gods. Go back with her."
16 But Ruth replied, "Don't urge me to leave you or to
turn back from you.Where you go I will go, and where you stay I will stay.
Your people will be my people and your God my God.
17 Where you die I will die, and there I will be buried.
May the LORD deal with me, be it ever so severely,
if anything but death separates you and me."
18 When Naomi realized that Ruth was determined to
go with her, she stopped urging her.

• PSALM 146 (UMH 858)
New International Version (NIV)

A meditation on God's care for the poor, the
needy, widows, orphans, and sojourners.

1 Praise the LORD.
Praise the LORD, O my soul.

2 I will praise the LORD all my life;
I will sing praise to my God as long as I live.

3 Do not put your trust in princes,
in mortal men, who cannot save.

4 When their spirit departs, they return to the ground;
on that very day their plans come to nothing.

5 Blessed is he whose help is the God of Jacob,
whose hope is in the LORD his God,

6 the Maker of heaven and earth,
the sea, and everything in them—
the LORD, who remains faithful forever.

7 He upholds the cause of the oppressed
and gives food to the hungry.
The LORD sets prisoners free,

8 the LORD gives sight to the blind,
the LORD lifts up those who are bowed down,
the LORD loves the righteous.

9 The LORD watches over the alien
and sustains the fatherless and the widow,
but he frustrates the ways of the wicked.

10 The LORD reigns forever,
your God, O Zion, for all generations.
Praise the LORD.

HEBREWS 9:11-14 Amplified Bible (AB)
We see contrasting the offering of Christ, which
delivers us from the power of sin, with the ritual
sacrificial offerings of the Aaronic priesthood,
which address only matters of ritual impurity.

11 But when Christ (the Messiah) appeared as a
High Priest of the better things that have come and
are to come. Then through the greater and more
perfect tabernacle not made with human hands, that
is, not a part of this material creation,
12 He went once for all into the Holies of heaven, not
by virtue of the blood of goats and calves [by which to
make reconciliation between God and man], but His
own blood, having found and secured a complete
redemption, an everlasting release for us.
13 For if the mere sprinkling of unholy and defiled
persons with blood of goats and bulls and with the
ashes of a burnt heifer is sufficient for the purification
of the body,
14 How much more surely shall the blood of Christ,
Who by virtue of His eternal Spirit His own pre-existent
divine personality has offered Himself as an
unblemished sacrifice to God, purify our consciences
from dead works and lifeless observances to serve the
ever living God?

MARK 12:28-34
New Living Translation (NLT)
A scribe asks Jesus to state the most important
instruction in Torah. Jesus replies with love of God
above all and neighbor as oneself. The scribe agrees,
adding that this is more important than anything the
sacrificial system can do or requires.

THE MOST IMPORTANT COMMANDMENT
28 One of the teachers of religious law was standing
there listening to the debate. He realized that Jesus
had answered well, so he asked,
“Of all the commandments, which is the most important?”29 Jesus replied, “The most important commandment is
this: ‘Listen, O Israel! The Lord our God is the one and
only Lord.
30 And you must love the Lord your God with all
your
heart, all your soul, all your mind, and all
your strength.

31 The second is equally important: ‘Love your neighbor
as yourself.’ No other commandment is greater than these.”
32 The teacher of religious law replied, “Well said, Teacher.
You have spoken the truth by saying that there is only one
God and no other.
33 And I know it is important to love him with all my heart
and all my understanding and all my strength, and to love
my neighbor as myself. This is more important than to offer
all of the burnt offerings and sacrifices required in the law.”
34 Realizing how much the man understood, Jesus said to
him, “You are not far from the Kingdom of God.” And after
that, no one dared to ask him any more questions.
