Choir Practice - 7 P.M. at Casey UMC
This is the National Day of Prayer for
"MENTAL ILLNESS AND RECOVERY"
mental health and not keeping the stigma of
negativity of mental disorder or mental illness
going in our culture. I work at least twice a month
on my mental health with a health care professional
to keep a healthy balance. Do you have a health
care provider to assist you? Do you want to talk
about mental health and mental disorder?
Contact me or your health care provider for more
information.
PBS televised a special on the difficulty for the
mentally ill to attain medical attention. If they
exhibit undesirable behavior, they are arrested.
If it is determined they need help for mental illness,
they are given a doctor's appointment for next
month and sent home. This scenario is repeated
over and over. If we could get the criminal justice
community and the medical community together,
we might accomplish great things.

Our Scripture Readings are:
JOB 23:1-9, 16-17
Job speaks boldly to God and his friends from
the ash heap.
Job tells his "friends" that he is earnestly
seeking God, trusting that God will listen to his
arguments that his suffering appears unjust;
but that as much as he seeks, he finds God
absent or at least non-responsive. Job is weary.
He feels if he can't get a hearing before the God
who is either inflicting or allowing his intense
suffering, he wants to be so far from God that
God can't find him. Job's friends have tried to
convince him that he must have done something
to deserve what has happened to him because
God is just. For them that means that God blesses
the righteous and brings suffering and
punishment to the wicked.
JOB 23:1-9; JOB 23:16-17
New International Reader's Version (NIRV)
JOB'S REPLY
1 Job replied,
2 "Today my problems are more than I can handle.
In spite of my anguish, God's hand is heavy on me.
3 I wish I knew where I could find him!
I wish I could go to the place where he lives!
4 I would state my case to him.
I'd give him all of my arguments.
5 I'd find out what his answers would be.
I'd think about what he would say.
6 Would he oppose me with his great power?
No. He wouldn't bring charges against me.
7 I'm an honest person. I could state my case to him.
Then my Judge would tell me once and for all that
I'm not guilty.
8 "But if I go to the east, God isn't there.
If I go to the west, I don't find him.
9 When he's working in the north, I don't see him there.
When he turns south, I don't see him there either.
JOB 23:16-17
16 God has made my heart weak. The Mighty One has filled me with terror.
17 But even the darkness of death won't make me
silent. When the darkness of the grave covers my
face, I won't be quiet.

PSALM 22:1-15 (UMH 752)
New International Reader's Version (NIRV)
"My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?"
This is an ancient lament of people seeking God in
the midst of suffering they cannot explain. It is a
very fitting response to the reading from Job.
1 My God, my God, why have you deserted me?Why do you seem to be so far away when I need
you to save me?
Why do you seem to be so far away that you can't
hear my groans?2 My God, I cry out in the daytime. You don't answer.
I cry out at night. I can't keep quiet.
3 But you rule from your throne as the Holy One.
You are the God Israel praises.
4 Our people of long ago put their trust in you.
They trusted in you, and you saved them.
5 They cried out to you and were saved.
They trusted in you, and you didn't let them down.
6 People treat me like a worm and not a man.
They hate me and look down on me.
7 All those who see me laugh at me.
They shout at me and make fun of me.
They shake their heads at me.
8 They say, "He trusts in the Lord.
Let the Lord help him.
If the Lord is pleased with him,
let him save him."
9 But you brought me out of my mother's body.
You made me trust in you
even when I was at my mother's breast.
10 From the time I was born, you took care of me.
Ever since I came out of my mother's body,
you have been my God.
11 Don't be far away from me.
Trouble is near,
and there is no one to help me.
12 Many enemies are all around me.
They are like strong bulls from the land of Bashan.
13 They are like roaring lions that tear to pieces
what they kill.
They open their mouths wide to attack me.
14 My strength is like water that is poured out on
the ground.
I feel as if my bones aren't connected.
My heart has turned to wax.
It has melted away inside me.
15 My strength is dried up like a piece of broken
pottery.
My tongue sticks to the roof of my mouth.
You bring me down to the edge of the grave.

HEBREWS 4:12-16
New Living Translation (NLT)
The word of God is not words in a book, but a
living, energetic, cutting force that exposes
everything in our soul, spirit, lives, passions –
and premeditations to God's all-seeing gaze,
even if not to our own conscious awareness.
12 For the word of God is alive and powerful. It is
sharper than the sharpest two-edged sword, cutting
between soul and spirit, between joint and marrow.
It exposes our innermost thoughts and desires.
13 Nothing in all creation is hidden from God.
Everything is naked and exposed before his eyes,
and he is the one to whom we are accountable.
CHRIST IS OUR HIGH PRIEST
14 So then, since we have a great High Priest who
has entered heaven, Jesus the Son of God, let us
hold firmly to what we believe.
15 This High Priest of ours understands our
weaknesses, for he faced all of the same testings we
do, yet he did not sin.
16 So let us come boldly to the throne of our gracious
God. There we will receive his mercy, and we will find
grace to help us when we need it most.

MARK 10:17-31
New Living Translation (NLT)
An encounter between Jesus and a fairly wealthy
man who has been faithful to the core principles
of Torah toward other people seeks the secret of
eternal life. Jesus tells him he need do only one
more thing – sell all he has, distribute the proceeds
to the poor, and come follow him. He goes away
disturbed by what he hears. Jesus' disciples are
left wondering how anyone can experience
salvation if a person so clearly blessed by God
(in their view) will not.
THE RICH MAN
17 As Jesus was starting out on his way to
Jerusalem, a man came running up to him, knelt
down, and asked, “Good Teacher, what must I do
to inherit eternal life?”
18 “Why do you call me good?” Jesus asked.
“Only God is truly good.
19 But to answer your question, you know the
commandments: ‘You must not murder. You
must not commit adultery. You must not steal. You
must not testify falsely. You must not cheat anyone.
Honor your father and mother.’ ”
20 “Teacher,” the man replied, “I’ve obeyed all these
commandments since I was young.”
21 Looking at the man, Jesus felt genuine love for him.
“There is still one thing you haven’t done,” he told him.
“Go and sell all your possessions and give the money
to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven.
Then come, follow me.”
22 At this the man’s face fell, and he went away sad,
for he had many possessions.
23 Jesus looked around and said to his disciples,
“How hard it is for the rich to enter the Kingdom of God!”
24 This amazed them. But Jesus said again, “Dear
children, it is very hard to enter the Kingdom of God.
25 In fact, it is easier for a camel to go through the
eye of a needle than for a rich person to enter the
Kingdom of God!”
26 The disciples were astounded. “Then who in the
world can be saved?” they asked.
27 Jesus looked at them intently and said, “Humanly
speaking, it is impossible. But not with God. Everything
is possible with God.”
28 Then Peter began to speak up. “We’ve given up
everything to follow you,” he said.
29 “Yes,” Jesus replied, “and I assure you that
everyone who has given up house or brothers or
sisters or mother or father or children or property,
for my sake and for the Good News,
30 will receive now in return a hundred times as
many houses, brothers, sisters, mothers, children,
and property—along with persecution. And in the
world to come that person will have eternal life.
31 But many who are the greatest now will be least
important then, and those who seem least important
now will be the greatest then.”

Remember next week we will need to work on
preparations for In Gathering. This year marks
30 YEARS OF INGATHERING PARTICIPATION.
In 1978, Westmar College in LeMars , Iowa began
working to develop ways the college could be involved
with needs of the Third World within our
United Methodist Church ; Dr. Art Richardson and
Mr. Bill Applegate began to develop an idea. In the
Spring of 1979, Art, Bill and the pastors from the two
United Methodist Churches in LeMars began the
planning of what was to become this long line of
Thanksgiving Ingatherings.
Those who developed this project deserve a huge
“THANK YOU” for the God-given inspiration to begin
an amazing mission that would touch so many around
the world. As you prepare for
Ingathering Day, Saturday, November 7th,
remember those who worked so hard to
make this possible 30 years ago!
