And he said to them, "Thus it is written,
that the Messiah is to suffer and to rise

repentance and forgiveness of sins is to

You are witnesses of these things"

SCRIPTURE READINGS —
———————————————————
ACTS 3:12-19
THE MESSAGE (MSG)
After a lame beggar is cured by power
of the Risen Lord through Peter and
John, Peter invites the wondering
crowd to repent and follow Jesus.
5000 of them do!

TURN TO FACE GOD
12-16 When Peter saw he had a full
congregation, he addressed the people:
“Oh, Israelites, why does this take you
by such complete surprise, and why
stare at us as if our power or piety
made him walk? The God of Abraham
and Isaac and Jacob, the God of our
ancestors, has glorified his Son Jesus.
The very One that Pilate called innocent,
you repudiated. You repudiated the Holy
One, the Just One, and asked for a
murderer in his place. You no sooner
killed the Author of Life than God raised
him from the dead—and we are the
witnesses. Faith in Jesus’ name put this
man, whose condition you know so well,
on his feet—yes, faith and nothing but
faith put this man healed and whole
right before your eyes.
17-18 “And now, friends, I know you had
no idea what you were doing when you
killed Jesus, and neither did your
leaders. But God, who through the
preaching of all the prophets had said
all along that his Messiah would be
killed, knew exactly what you were
doing and used it to fulfill his plans.
19-23 “Now it’s time to change your
ways! Turn to face God so he can wipe
away your sins, pour out showers of
blessing to refresh you, and send you
the Messiah he prepared for you,
namely, Jesus. For the time being he
must remain out of sight in heaven until
everything is restored to order again
just the way God, through the preaching
of his holy prophets of old, said it
would be. Moses, for instance, said,
‘Your God will raise up for you a
prophet just like me from your family.
Listen to every word he speaks to you.
Every last living soul who refuses to
listen to that prophet will be wiped out
from the people.’

PSALM 4
THE MESSAGE (MSG)
Thanks to God for vindication and
rebuke to those who criticize and
disgrace.

A PSALM OF DAVID
When I call, give me answers. God,
take my side!
Once, in a tight place, you gave me
room;
Now I’m in trouble again: grace me!
hear me!
2 You rabble—how long do I put up with
your scorn?
How long will you lust after lies?
How long will you live crazed by
illusion?
3 Look at this: look
Who got picked by God!
He listens the split second I call to him.
4-5 Complain if you must, but don’t lash
out.
Keep your mouth shut, and let your
heart do the talking.
Build your case before God and wait for
his verdict.
6-7 Why is everyone hungry for more?
“More, more,” they say.
“More, more.”
I have God’s more-than-enough,
More joy in one ordinary day
7-8 Than they get in all their shopping
sprees.
At day’s end I’m ready for sound sleep,
For you, God, have put my life back
together.

1 JOHN 3:1-7
THE MESSAGE (MSG)

1 We are God's children now as we abide
in Jesus. Abiding in Jesus enables us to
live more and more without sin.
Repentance is no one-time act, but a
lifelong commitment to abide in Jesus.
That is why we continue to purify our-
selves that we may be like him when he
appears.
3 What marvelous love the Father has
extended to us! Just look at it—we’re
called children of God! That’s who we
really are. But that’s also why the world
doesn’t recognize us or take us
seriously, because it has no idea who
he is or what he’s up to.
2-3 But friends, that’s exactly who we
are: children of God. And that’s only the
beginning. Who knows how we’ll end
up! What we know is that when Christ is
openly revealed, we’ll see him—and in
seeing him, become like him. All of us
who look forward to his Coming stay
ready, with the glistening purity of
Jesus’ life as a model for our own.
4-6 All who indulge in a sinful life are
dangerously lawless, for sin is a major
disruption of God’s order. Surely you
know that Christ showed up in order to
get rid of sin. There is no sin in him, and
sin is not part of his program. No one
who lives deeply in Christ makes a
practice of sin. None of those who do
practice sin have taken a good look at
Christ. They’ve got him all backward.
7-8 So, my dear children, don’t let any-
one divert you from the truth. It’s the
person who acts right who is right, just
as we see it lived out in our righteous
Messiah. Those who make a practice of
sin are straight from the Devil, the
pioneer in the practice of sin. The Son
of God entered the scene to abolish the
Devil’s ways.

LUKE 24:36-48
THE MESSAGE (MSG)
After his appearance to two dispirited
disciples heading toward Emmaus,

Jesus tells the rest of those gathered
at another meal to proclaim repentance
and forgiveness of sins in his name.

36-41 While they were saying all this,
Jesus appeared to them and said,
“Peace be with you.” They thought they
were seeing a ghost and were scared
half to death. He continued with them,
“Don’t be upset, and don’t let all these
doubting questions take over. Look at
my hands; look at my feet—it’s really
me. Touch me. Look me over from head
to toe. A ghost doesn’t have muscle and
bone like this.” As he said this, he
showed them his hands and feet. They
still couldn’t believe what they were
seeing. It was too much; it seemed too
good to be true.
41-43 He asked, “Do you have any food
here?” They gave him a piece of leftover
fish they had cooked. He took it and ate
it right before their eyes.
YOU'RE THE WITNESSES
44 Then he said, “Everything I told you
while I was with you comes to this: All
the things written about me in the Law
of Moses, in the Prophets, and in the
Psalms have to be fulfilled.”
45-49 He went on to open their under-
standing of the Word of God, showing
them how to read their Bibles this way.
He said, “You can see now how it is
written that the Messiah suffers, rises
from the dead on the third day, and then
a total life-change through the forgive-
ness of sins is proclaimed in his name
to all nations—starting from here, from
Jerusalem! You’re the first to hear and
see it. You’re the witnesses. What
comes next is very important: I am
sending what my Father promised to
you, so stay here in the city until he
arrives, until you’re equipped with
power from on high.”

ACTS 4:32-35
THE MESSAGE (MSG)
Christians living in Jerusalem show
clear signs of the Risen Christ among
them by sharing all things, bearing
witness to the resurrection of Jesus,
and caring for all who are in need.

   32-33 The whole congregation of
believers was united as one—one
heart, one mind! They didn’t even
claim ownership of their own
possessions. No one said, “That’s
mine; you can’t have it.” They shared
everything. The apostles gave
powerful witness to the resurrection
of the Master Jesus, and grace was
on all of them.
34-35 And so it turned out that not a
person among them was needy. Those
who owned fields or houses sold them
and brought the price of the sale to the
apostles and made an offering of it.
The apostles then distributed it according
to each person’s need.

PSALM 133  (UMH 850)
THE MESSAGE (MSG)
Though this was originally designed to
celebrate the unity of a small group of
pilgrims heading toward the temple in
Jerusalem, it quickly came to be used
to express the unity of a whole people
of God around the earth.

A PILGRIM SONG OF DAVID
1-3
How wonderful, how beautiful,
when brothers and sisters get along!
It’s like costly anointing oil
    flowing down head and beard,
Flowing down Aaron’s beard,
flowing down the collar of his priestly
 robes.
It’s like the dew on Mount Hermon
flowing down the slopes of Zion.
Yes, that’s where God commands the
blessing, and ordains eternal life.
———————————————————
1 JOHN 1:1-2:2
THE MESSAGE (MSG)
More signs of the presence of the risen
Lord in our midst: honest confession,
assurance of God's forgiveness, and
lives where sin's power is overcome.

1 JOHN 1
1-2 From the very first day, we were
there, taking it all in—we heard it with
our own ears, saw it with our own eyes,
verified it with our own hands. The Word
of Life appeared right before our eyes;
we saw it happen! And now we’re telling
you in most sober prose that what we
witnessed was, incredibly, this: The
infinite Life of God himself took shape
before us.
3-4 We saw it, we heard it, and now
we’re telling you so you can
experience it along with us, this
experience of communion with the
Father and his Son, Jesus Christ. Our
motive for writing is simply this: We
want you to enjoy this, too. Your joy will
double our joy!
WALK IN THE LIGHT
5
This, in essence, is the message we
heard from Christ and are passing on to
you: God is light, pure light; there’s not
a trace of darkness in him.
6-7 If we claim that we experience a
shared life with him and continue to
stumble around in the dark, we’re
obviously lying through our teeth–we’re
not living what we claim. But if we walk
in the light, God himself being the light,
we also experience a shared life with
one another, as the sacrificed blood of
Jesus, God’s Son, purges all our sin.
8-10 If we claim that we’re free of sin,
we’re only fooling ourselves. A claim
like that is errant nonsense. On the
other hand, if we admit our sins—make
a clean breast of them—he won’t let us
down; he’ll be true to himself. He’ll for-
give our sins and purge us of all wrong-
doing. If we claim that we’ve never
sinned, we out and out contradict God–
make a liar out of him. A claim like that
only shows off our ignorance of God.
1-2 I write this, dear children, to guide
you out of sin. But if anyone does sin,
we have a Priest-Friend in the presence
of the Father: Jesus Christ, righteous
Jesus. When he served as a sacrifice for
our sins, he solved the sin problem for
good—not only ours, but the whole
world’s.
THE ONLY WAY TO KNOW WE'RE IN HIM
2-3
Here’s how we can be sure that we
know God in the right way: Keep his
commandments.
———————————————————
JOHN  20:19-31
THE MESSAGE (MSG)
To help Thomas believe, Jesus
appeared among the disciples, showing
Thomas the scars in his hands and side
and then invited Thomas to touch them.

TO BELIEVE
19-20
Later on that day, the disciples
had gathered together, but, fearful of the
Jews, had locked all the doors in the
house. Jesus entered, stood among
them, and said, “Peace to you.” Then he
showed them his hands and side.
20-21 The disciples, seeing the Master
with their own eyes, were exuberant.
Jesus repeated his greeting: “Peace to
you. Just as the Father sent me, I send
you.”
22-23 Then he took a deep breath and
breathed into them. “Receive the Holy
Spirit,” he said. “If you forgive some-
one’s sins, they’re gone for good. If you
don’t forgive sins, what are you going
to do with them?”
24-25 But Thomas, sometimes called the
Twin, one of the Twelve, was not with
them when Jesus came. The other
disciples told him, “We saw the Master.”

But he said, “Unless I see the nail holes
in his hands, put my finger in the nail
holes, and stick my hand in his side, I
won’t believe it.”

26 Eight days later, his disciples were
again in the room. This time Thomas
was with them. Jesus came through the
locked doors, stood among them, and
said, “Peace to you.”
27 Then he focused his attention on
Thomas. “Take your finger and examine
my hands. Take your hand and stick it in
my side. Don’t be unbelieving. Believe.”
28 Thomas said, “My Master! My God!”
29 Jesus said, “So, you believe because
you’ve seen with your own eyes. Even
better blessings are in store for those
who believe without seeing.”
30-31 Jesus provided far more God-
revealing signs than are written down in
this book. These are written down so
you will believe that Jesus is the
Messiah, the Son of God, and in the act
of believing, have real and eternal life in
the way he personally revealed it.
