PROVERBS 31:10-31

Today's New International Version (TNIV)
This is the description of a virtuous woman of
those days, but the general outlines equally suit
every age and nation.
Praise of the "model"
married woman, rooted in God, faithful and
competent.

1. She can be trusted, and he will leave such a
wife to manage for him.

2. She approaches her duties carefully, and takes
pleasure in them. She rises early. She applies
herself with all her power, and trifles not.

3. She considers prudent management.
She provides well for her house.

4. She looks well to the ways of her household,
that she may oblige all to do their duty to God
and one another, as well as to her.

5. She is as intent upon giving as upon getting,
and does it freely and cheerfully.

6. She is discreet and obliging; every word she
says, shows she governs herself by the rules of
wisdom. The law of love and kindness is written
in her heart, and shows itself on her tongue.
7. Above all, she fears the Lord.
Beauty recommends none to God, nor is it any
proof of wisdom and goodness, but it has
deceived many a man making his choice of a wife.
The beauty of the soul lasts for ever.

Epilogue: A WIFE OF NOBLE CHARACTER
10 A wife of noble character, who can find? She is
worth far more than rubies.

11 Her husband has full confidence in her and lacks
nothing of value.

12 She brings him good, not harm,
all the days of
her life.

13 She selects wool and flax
and works with eager
hands.

14 She is like the merchant ships,
bringing her food
from afar.

15 She gets up while it is still night; she provides
food for her family
and portions for her women servants.
16 She considers a field and buys it;
out of her
earnings she plants a vineyard.

17 She sets about her work vigorously;
her arms are
strong for her tasks.

18 She sees that her trading is profitable, and her lamp
does not go out at night.

19 In her hand she holds the distaff
and grasps the
spindle with her fingers.

20 She opens her arms to the poor
and extends her
hands to the needy.

21 When it snows, she has no fear for her household;

for all of them are clothed in scarlet.
22 She makes coverings for her bed; she is clothed in
fine linen and purple.

23 Her husband is respected at the city gate, where
he takes his seat among the elders of the land.

24 She makes linen garments and sells them,
and
supplies the merchants with sashes.

25 She is clothed with strength and dignity; she can
laugh at the days to come.

26 She speaks with wisdom,
and faithful instruction
is on her tongue.

27 She watches over the affairs of her household
and does not eat the bread of idleness.

28 Her children arise and call her blessed; her
husband also, and he praises her:
29 "Many women do noble things, but you surpass
them all."

30 Charm is deceptive, and beauty is fleeting;
but
a woman who fears the LORD is to be praised.

31 Honor her for all that her hands have done,
and
let her works bring her praise at the city gate.

PSALM 1 (UMH 738)
New International Reader's Version (NIRV)
A celebration of a way of life rooted in God and
fed by the springs of the Spirit through prayer
and meditation on the word of God, especially
through singing psalms or other sacred canticles.

1 Blessed is the one who obeys the law of the Lord.
He doesn't follow the advice of evil people. He
doesn't make a habit of doing what sinners do.

He doesn't join those who make fun of the Lord
and his law.

2 Instead, he takes delight in the law of the Lord.

He thinks about his law day and night.

3 He is like a tree that is planted by a stream of
water.
It always bears its fruit at the right time.
Its leaves don't dry up.
Everything godly people
do turns out well.

4 Sinful people are not like that at all.
They are
like straw
that the wind blows away.
5 When the Lord judges them, their life will come
to an end.
Sinners won't have any place among
those who are godly.

6 The Lord watches over the lives of those who
are godly.
But the lives of sinful people will lead
to their death.

JAMES 3:13-4:3, 7-8a
New Living Translation (NLT)
Those who live from the wisdom from above live
in peace — responding graciously toward others,
resisting the selfish willfulness of the flesh, and
drawing near to God.

JAMES 3:13-4:3
TRUE WISDOM COMES FROM GOD
13 If you are wise and understand God’s ways,
prove it by living an honorable life, doing good
works with the humility that comes from wisdom.
14 But if you are bitterly jealous and there is selfish
ambition in your heart, don’t cover up the truth with
oasting and lying.
15 For jealousy and selfishness are not God’s kind
of wisdom. Such things are earthly, unspiritual, and
demonic.
16 For wherever there is jealousy and selfish ambition,
there you will find disorder and evil of every kind.
17 But the wisdom from above is first of all pure. It
is also peace loving, gentle at all times, and willing to
yield to others. It is full of mercy and good deeds. It
shows no favoritism and is always sincere.
18 And those who are peacemakers will plant seeds
of peace and reap a harvest of righteousness.
JAMES 4
DRAWING CLOSE TO GOD
1 What is causing the quarrels and fights among you?
Don’t they come from the evil desires at war within you?
2 You want what you don’t have, so you scheme and
kill to get it. You are jealous of what others have, but
you can’t get it, so you fight and wage war to take it
away from them. Yet you don’t have what you want
because you don’t ask God for it.
3 And even when you ask, you don’t get it because
your motives are all wrong—you want only what will
give you pleasure.

MARK 9:30-37
New Living Translation (NLT)
Jesus teaches his disciples a second time that he
will face betrayal, execution, and resurrection. For
the second time as well, the disciples demonstrate
they do not understand his teaching by continuing

to argue about who is the greatest.

JESUS AGAIN PREDICTS HIS DEATH
30 Leaving that region, they traveled through Galilee.
Jesus didn’t want anyone to know he was there,
31 for he wanted to spend more time with his disciples
and teach them. He said to them, “The Son of Man is
going to be betrayed into the hands of his enemies.
He will be killed, but three days later he will rise from
he dead.”
32 They didn’t understand what he said, however,
and they were afraid to ask him what he meant.
THE GREATEST IN THE KINGDOM
33 After they arrived at Capernaum and settled in a
house, Jesus asked his disciples, “What were you
discussing out on the road?”
34 But they didn’t answer, because they had been
arguing about which of them was the greatest.
35 He sat down, called the twelve disciples over to
him, and said, “Whoever wants to be first must take
last place and be the servant of everyone else.”
36 Then he put a little child among them. Taking the
child in his arms, he said to them,
37 “Anyone who welcomes a little child like this on
my behalf welcomes me, and anyone who welcomes
me welcomes not only me but also
my Father who sent me.”

FUTURE FOCUS —
October 4th is World Communion Sunday
≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈
In an age that delights in the eccentric, where the
sideshow is center stage in prime time, and where the
most outrageous or loudest voices get primary attention,
the Scriptures' praise of a centered, rooted, grounded
life may seem quaint
, and even laughable to some.
Look for evidence of rootedness, groundedness, and
confident centeredness - in nature, and in people you
know with deep spiritual conviction.
We see over and over again that these are the roots
that hold fast, the roots that keep us balanced, straight
and steady in the storm, like the Proverb's wife of noble
character. As our time on earth passes, we meet people
who always endure, who seem always upright and
centered. When we get dizzy and start to fall, we
instinctively seek these people.
Raucous and outrageous may seem like fun for a
minute, but the stress can become overwhelming very
quickly. Think about who you know that is steady as
a rock in the storms of life; who influences your
judgment; who strengthens your character. A parent,
a good friend, a coworker, a counselor, a minister. You
can find them everywhere - just look.

Thank you for your ceaseless help during our busy week.
God Bless and Keep You,
Pastor Lynn
