OUR SCRIPTURE READINGS TODAY ARE:
ESTHER 7:1-6, 9-10; 9:20-22
New International Version (NIV)
If the love of life causes earnest pleadings with
those that can only kill the body, how fervent
should our prayers be to Him, who is able to

destroy both body and soul? How should we
pray for the salvation of our relatives, friends,
and all around us?
We see Esther advocating
to the king for her
life and the lives of her
people. We see the
execution of Haman on the
gallows he had
prepared for Mordecai, and the
establishment
of the feast of Purim.
ESTHER 7:1-6
HAMAN HANGED
1 The king and Haman dined with Queen Esther,
2 and as they were drinking wine on that second
day, the king again asked, "Queen Esther, what is
your petition? It will be given you. What is your
request? Even half the kingdom, it will be granted."
3 Then Queen Esther answered, "If I have found
favor with you, O king, and if it pleases your majesty,
grant me my life—this is my petition. And spare my
people—this is my request.
4 For I and my people have been sold for destruction
and slaughter and annihilation. If we had merely been
sold as male and female slaves, I would have kept
quiet, because no such distress would justify disturbing
the king."
5 King Xerxes asked Queen Esther, "Who is he?
Where is the man who has dared to do such a thing?"
6 "The adversary and enemy is this vile Haman,"
said Esther. Then Haman was terrified before the
king and queen.ESTHER 7:9-10
9 Then Harbona, one of the eunuchs attending the
king, said, "A gallows seventy-five feet high stands
by Haman's house. He had it made for Mordecai,
who spoke up to help the king."
The king said, "Hang him on it!"10 So they hanged Haman on the gallows he had
prepared for Mordecai. Then the king's fury subsided.
ESTHER 9:20-22
20 Mordecai recorded these events, and he sent
letters to all the Jews throughout the provinces of
King Xerxes, near and far,
21 to have them celebrate annually the fourteenth
and fifteenth days of the month of Adar
22 as the time when the Jews got relief from their
enemies, and as the month when their sorrow was
turned into joy and their mourning into a day of
celebration. He wrote them to observe the days as
days of feasting and joy and giving presents of
food to one another and gifts to the poor.

PSALM 124 (UMH 846)
New Century Version (NCV)
A psalm of thanksgiving to God for deliverance.
Psalm 124
The Lord Saves His People
A song for going up to worship. Of David.
1 What if the Lord had not been on our side?
(Let Israel repeat this.)
2 What if the Lord had not been on our side
when we were attacked?
3 When they were angry with us,
they would have swallowed us alive.
4 They would have been like a flood drowning us;
they would have poured over us like a river.
5 They would have swept us away like a mighty stream.

6 Praise the Lord,
who did not let them chew us up.
7 We escaped like a bird
from the hunter's trap.
The trap broke,
and we escaped.
8 Our help comes from the Lord,
who made heaven and earth.

JAMES 5:13-20
NEW LIVING TRANSLATION (NLT)
THE POWER OF PRAYER
James calls for individual and corporate acts
of
prayer for healing and confession for
forgiveness
of sin and commends those
who seek to restore
those who are wandering
from the faith.

13 Are any of you suffering hardships? You
should pray.
Are any of you happy? You should sing praises.14 Are any of you sick? You should call for the
elders of the church to come and pray over you,
anointing you with oil in the name of the Lord.
15 Such a prayer offered in faith will heal the
sick, and the Lord will make you well. And if you
have committed any sins, you will be forgiven.
16 Confess your sins to each other and pray for
each other so that you may be healed. The
earnest prayer of a righteous person has great
power and produces wonderful results.
17 Elijah was as human as we are, and yet when
he prayed earnestly that no rain would fall, none
fell for three and a half years!
18 Then, when he prayed again, the sky sent
down rain and the earth began to yield its crops.
RESTORE WANDERING BELIEVERS
19 My dear brothers and sisters, if someone
among you wanders away from the truth and is
brought back,
20 you can be sure that whoever brings the
sinner back will save that person from death
and bring about the forgiveness of many sins.

MARK 9:38-50
NEW LIVING TRANSLATION (NLT)
The time of Christ's suffering drew nigh. Had
he been delivered into the hands of devils,
and they had done this, it had not been so
strange.
Stern teaching against putting
"stumbling blocks" in front of any who are
seeking the way of Jesus. Rather than creating
or tolerating stumbling blocks, disciples of
Jesus are actively removing them, even if at
high cost to themselves.

USING THE NAME OF JESUS
38 John said to Jesus, “Teacher, we saw someone
using your name to cast out demons, but we told
him to stop because he wasn’t in our group.”
39 “Don’t stop him!” Jesus said. “No one who
performs a miracle in my name will soon be able to
speak evil of me.
40 Anyone who is not against us is for us.

41 If anyone gives you even a cup of water because
you belong to the Messiah, I tell you the truth, that
person will surely be rewarded.
42 “But if you cause one of these little ones who
trusts in me to fall into sin, it would be better for you
to be thrown into the sea with a large millstone hung
around your neck.
43 If your hand causes you to sin, cut it off. It’s better
to enter eternal life with only one hand than to go into
the unquenchable fires of hell with two hands.
45-46 If your foot causes you to sin, cut it off. It’s
better to enter eternal life with only one foot than to
be thrown into hell with two feet.
47 And if your eye causes you to sin, gouge it out.
It’s better to enter the Kingdom of God with only one
eye than to have two eyes and be thrown into hell,
48 ‘where maggots never die and fire never goes out.’
49 “For everyone will be tested with fire.
50 Salt is good for seasoning. But if it loses its flavor,
how do you make it salty again? You must have the
qualities of salt among yourselves and live in peace
with each other.”

OCTOBER 4TH —
WORLD COMMUNION SUNDAY

World Communion Sunday is emphasized in The
United Methodist Church and celebrated in many
other Protestant churches world wide on the first
Sunday in October.
In 1940 the Federal Council of Churches of Christ
in America established World-wide Communion
Sunday - originally a Presbyterian observance -
as a global, interdenominational event.
During World War II, the Methodist Church received
an offering on this Sunday for the Fellowship of
Suffering and Service, used in the work of the
Methodist Committee on Overseas Relief.
Now the money is used for Scholarship programs.
In 2008 World Communion offering totaled
$1,028,865, all to be used for scholarships.

Thank you for your selfless heart during these
sometimes anxious days. None of us knows when we
will require the help and support of someone else.
Being there for our fellow human beings is what makes
us noble, and you are indeed a noble group.
God Bless and Keep You,
Pastor Lynn
