FRIDAY, MARCH 5TH —
WORLD DAY OF PRAYER —
This year the United Methodist Women are focusing on
the small African Country of Cameroon, with emphasis
on children's rights and the AIDS epidemic. Most of the
challenges faced by Cameroonian children have to do
with forced labor, human trafficking, and poverty-related
survival measures. If there was ever a world that needed prayer, we have
one. The natural disasters of the past few weeks are
incredible. The dangerous terrain our military personnel are asked to
patrol is intolerable. Each time they go out, their lives are
on the line.Sometimes it's hard to know which way to focus.
We have some addresses of military personnel
from our local area.

THIRD SUNDAY IN LENT
COLOR - PURPLE
LENTEN SCRIPTURE: Mark 10:35-44
(The Message)
by Eugene Peterson ©2002
A JOURNEY TO HOPE - SELF ESTEEM
35 James and John, Zebedee's sons, came up to him.
"Teacher, we have something we want you to do for us."
36 "What is it? I'll see what I can do."
37 "Arrange it," they said, "so that we will be awarded
the highest places of honor in your glory - one of us at
your right, the other at your left."
38 Jesus said, "You have no idea what you're asking.
Are you capable of drinking the cup I drink, of being
baptized in the baptism I'm about to be plunged into?"
39 "Sure," they said. "Why not?"
40 But as to awarding places of honor, that's not my
business. There are other arrangements for that."
41 When the other ten heard of this conversation, they
lost their tempers with James and John.42 Jesus got them together to settle things down.
"You've observed how godless rulers throw their weight
around," he said, "and when people get a little power
how quickly it goes to their heads.
43 It's not going to be that way with you. Whoever wants
to be great must become a servant.
44 Whoever wants to be first among you must be a slave.

ISAIAH 55:1-9
(The Message) by Eugene Peterson ©2002
THE CALL OF THE GENTILE WORLD TO FAITH AS

THE RESULT OF GOD'S GRACE TO THE JEWS
FIRST.
A prophetic song in which God promises
mercy,
pardon, and abundant provision to those
who
repent and trust in God.
1 "Hey there! All who are thirsty, come to the
water!
Are you penniless? Come anyway - buy
and eat! Come, buy your drinks, buy wine and
milk. Buy without money - everything's free!
2 Why do you spend your money on junk food,
your hard-earned cash on cotton candy? Listen
to me, listen well: Eat only the best, fill yourself
with only the finest.
3 Pay attention, come close now, listen carefully
to my life-giving, life-nourishing words. I'm making
a lasting covenant commitment with you, the same
that I made with David: sure, solid, enduring love.
4 I set him up as a witness to the nations, made
him a prince and leader of the nations,
5 And now I'm doing it to you: You'll summon
nations you've never heard of, and nations who've
never heard of you will come to you because
of me, your God, because The Holy of Israel has
honored you."
6 Seek God while he's here to be found, pray to
him while he's close at hand.
7 Let the wicked abandon their way of life and the
evil their way of thinking. Let them come back to
God, who is merciful, come back to our God, who
is lavish with forgiveness.
8 "I don't think the way you think. The way you
work isn't the way I work." God's Decree.
9 "For as the sky soars high above earth, so the
way I work surpasses the way you work, and the
way I think is beyond the way you think.

PSALM 63:1-8 (UMH 788)
(The Message) by Eugene Peterson ©2002
A Psalm of trust.
1 God - you're my God! I can't get enough of you!
I've worked up such hunger and thirst for God,
traveling across dry and weary deserts.
2 So here I am in the place of worship, eyes open,
drinking in your strength and glory.
3 In your generous love I am really living at last!
My lips brim praises like fountains.
4 I bless you every time I take a breath; My arms
wave like banners of praise to you.
5 I eat my fill of prime rib and gravy; I smack my
lips. It's time to shout praises!
6 If I'm sleepless at midnight, I spend the hours
in grateful reflection.
7 Because you've always stood up for me, I'm
free to run and play.
8 I hold on to you for dear life, and you hold me
steady as a post.

1 CORINTHIANS 10:1-13
(The Message)
The pattern of the baptized life is to be one of
continual repentance.

1 Remember our history, friends, and be warned.
All our ancestors were led by the providential Cloud
and taken miraculously through the Sea.
2 They went through the waters, in a baptism like ours,
as Moses led them from enslaving death to salvation.
3 They all ate
4 and drank identical food and drink, meals provided
daily by God. They drank from the Rock, God's fountain
for them that stayed with them wherever they were.
And the Rock was Christ.
5 But just experiencing God's wonder and grace didn't
seem to mean much - most of them were defeated by
temptation during the hard times in the desert, and God
was not pleased.
6 The same thing could happen to us. We must be on
guard so that we never get caught up in wanting our
own way as they did.
7 And we must not turn our religion into a circus as they
did - "First the people partied, then they threw a dance."
8 We must not be sexually promiscuous - they paid for
that, remember, with twenty-three thousand deaths in
one day!
9 We must never try to get Christ to serve us instead
of us serving him; they tried it, and God launched an
epidemic of poisonous snakes.
10 We must be careful not to stir up discontent;
discontent destroyed them.
11 These are all warning markers - danger! - in our
history books, written down so that we don't repeat
their mistakes. Our positions in the story are parallel -
they at the beginning, we at the end - and we are just
as capable of messing it up as they were.
12 Don't be so naive and self-confident. You're not
exempt. You could fall flat on your face as easily as
anyone else. Forget about self-confidence; it's useless.
Cultivate God-confidence.
13 No test or temptation that comes your way is beyond
the course of what others have had to face. All you need
to remember is that God will never let you down; he'll
never let you be pushed past your limit; he'll always be
there
to help you come through it.

LUKE 13:1-9
(The Message)
The fig tree and the gardener. F
ig season in
Palestine: “It has been asked, ‘How could our
Lord expect to find ripe figs in the end of March?’
Answer, Because figs were ripe in Judea as early
as the PASSOVER. Besides, the fig tree puts forth
its fruit FIRST, and afterwards its leaves. Indeed,
this tree, in the climate which is proper for it, has
fruit on it all the year round, as often seen”.
Jesus used this incident to teach His disciples —
that the outward appearance does not count with
God. Instead, what really counts is whether or not
one produces godly fruit in a lifetime.
(Clarke’s Commentary)
1 About that time some people came up and told him
about the Galileans Pilate had killed while they were
at worship, mixing their blood with the blood of the
sacrifices on the altar.
2 Jesus responded, "Do you think those murdered
Galileans were worse sinners than all other Galileans?
3 Not at all. Unless you turn to God, you too will die.
4 And those eighteen in Jerusalem the other day, the
ones crushed and killed when the Tower of Siloam
collapsed and fell on them, do you think they were
worse citizens than all other Jerusalemites?
5 Not at all. Unless you turn to God, you too will die."
6 Then he told them a story: "A man had an apple tree
planted in his front yard. He came to it expecting to find
apples, but there weren't any.
7 He said to his gardener, 'What's going on here? For
three years now I've come to this tree expecting apples
(figs) and not one apple (fig) have I found. Chop it down!
Why waste good ground with it any longer?'
8 "The gardener said, 'Let's give it another year. I'll dig
around it and fertilize,
9 and maybe it will produce next year; if it doesn't, then
chop it down.'"

It appears this winter is actually going to end.
I will not second guess Mother Nature, because she doesn't like that. We pray the mounds of snow go down
slowly with no additional precipitation to overwhelm our
saturated soil. I don't think Mother Nature would mind if
we prayed about it.

God Bless and Keep You,
Pastor Lynn
