FIRST SUNDAY OF LENT ◊◊◊◊◊ Our Color is Purple

Our Scripture Readings for today are:
GENESIS 9:8-17 (Amplified Bible)
As the old world was ruined, to be a monument of justice, so this world remains to this day a monument of mercy. The seal of this covenant was the rainbow, which, it is likely, was seen in the clouds before, but was never a seal of the covenant till now it was made so. The rainbow is the reflection of sunbeams shining through the drops of rain: all the glory of the seals of the covenant are derived from Christ, the Sun of righteousness.

8 Then God spoke to Noah and to his sons with him, saying,

9 Behold, I establish My covenant or pledge with you and with your descendants after you

10 And with every living creature that is with you - whether the birds, the livestock, or the wild beasts of the earth along with you, as many as came out of the ark - every animal of the earth.11 I will establish My covenant or pledge with you: Never again shall all flesh be cut off by the waters of a flood; neither shall there ever again be a flood to destroy the earth and make it corrupt.

12 And God said, This is the token of the covenant (solemn pledge) which I am making between Me and you and every living creature that is with you, for all future generations:

13 I set My rainbow in the clouds, and it shall be a token or sign of a covenant or solemn pledge between Me and the earth.14 And it shall be that when I bring clouds over the earth and the rainbow is seen in the clouds,

15 I will earnestly remember My covenant or solemn pledge which is between Me and you and every living creature of all flesh; and the waters will no more become a flood to destroy and make all flesh corrupt.

16 When the rainbow is in the clouds and I look upon it, I will earnestly remember the everlasting covenant or pledge between God and every living creature of all flesh that is upon the earth.

17 And God said to Noah, This rainbow is the token or sign of the covenant or solemn pledge which I have established between Me and all flesh upon the earth.
God offers the rainbow as a sign of God's covenant not to destroy the earth by flood again.

PSALM 25:1-10 (New International Version) (UMH 756)
The nation seeks God's deliverance from enemies; for unlike the people destroyed in the flood, Israel claims it has sought to follow God's way and wishes to learn it still better. This psalm is an acrostic poem, the verses of which begin with the successive letters of the Hebrew alphabet.

Psalm Of David.
1 To you, O LORD, I lift up my soul;

2 in you I trust, O my God.
Do not let me be put to shame,
nor let my enemies triumph over me.

3 No one whose hope is in you
will ever be put to shame,
but they will be put to shame
who are treacherous without excuse.

4 Show me your ways, O LORD,
teach me your paths;

5 guide me in your truth and teach me,
for you are God my Savior,
and my hope is in you all day long.6 Remember, O LORD, your great mercy and love,
for they are from of old.

7 Remember not the sins of my youth
and my rebellious ways;
according to your love remember me,
for you are good, O LORD.

8 Good and upright is the LORD;
therefore he instructs sinners in his ways.

9 He guides the humble in what is right
and teaches them his way.

10 All the ways of the LORD are loving and faithful
for those who keep the demands of his covenant.

1 PETER 3:18-22; (Amplified Bible)
Peter links the death and resurrection of Jesus with the story of Noah's flood and the sacrament of baptism. If Christ could not be freed from sufferings, why should Christians think to be so? God takes exact notice of the means and advantages people in all ages have had. As to the old world, Christ sent his Spirit; gave warning by Noah. But though the patience of God waits long, it will cease at last. Noah's salvation in the ark upon the water, which carried him above the floods, set forth the salvation of all true believers.

18 For Christ, the Messiah Himself, died for sins once and for all, the Righteous for the unrighteous, the Just for the unjust, the Innocent for the guilty, that He might bring us to God. In His human body He was put to death, but He was made alive in the spirit,

19 In which He went and preached to the spirits in prison,

20 The souls of those who long before, in the days of Noah, had been disobedient, when God's patience waited during the building of the ark in which a few people, actually eight in number, were saved through water.

21 And baptism, which is a figure of their deliverance, does now also save you from inward questionings and fears, not by the removing of outward body filth by bathing, but by providing you with the answer of a good and clear conscience, inward cleanness and peace, before God because you are demonstrating what you believe to be yours through the resurrection of Jesus Christ.

22 And He has now entered into heaven and is at the right hand of God, with all angels and authorities and powers made subservient to Him.

MARK 1:9-15 (Amplified Bible)
Christ's baptism was his first public appearance, after he had long lived unknown. Immediately after his baptism, He saw the Spirit descending upon him like a dove. The Spirit drives Jesus into the desert for a period of testing surrounded by wild animals, Satan, and ministering angels, all to prepare him to declare the good news of the kingdom of God. The serpent tempted the Adam in the garden, and Jesus in the wilderness; and ever since, he still tempts the children in all places and conditions.

9 In those days Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee and was baptized by John in the Jordan.10 And when He came up out of the water, at once John saw the heavens torn open and the Holy Spirit like a dove coming down to enter into Him.

11 And there came a voice out from within heaven, You are My Beloved Son; in You I am well pleased.

12 Immediately the Holy Spirit from within drove Him out into the wilderness desert,

13 And He stayed in the wilderness forty days, being tempted all the while by Satan; and He was with the wild beasts, and the angels ministered to Him continually.

14 Now after John was arrested and put in prison, Jesus came into Galilee, preaching the good news, the Gospel of the kingdom of God,
15 And saying, The appointed period of time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand; repent have a change of mind which issues in regret for past sins and in change of conduct for the better and believe trust in, rely on, and adhere to the good news the Gospel.

FRIDAY, MARCH 6TH — WORLD DAY OF PRAYER
≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈
The ladies of Casey UMC shared their talents and
created a prayer shawl to send the the Eighmy family
of Glendon, Iowa. You may recall the family home burned and they lost their
daughter, Trisha, in the fire. There can be no greater grief
than the loss of a child. Ladies, your act was very thoughtful
and I know you have countered their bad memories with a
very good memory. Thank you for your kindness.

God Bless and Keep You All,
Pastor Lynn
