ACTS 10:44-48 (New Living Translation) NLT
The Spirit pours on Cornelius and his household
while Peter is speaking. Peter then recognizes
it's time to baptize them. The Holy Ghost fell upon
others after they were baptized, to confirm them in
the faith; but fell upon these Gentiles before they
were baptized, to show that God does not confine
himself to outward signs.THE GENTILES RECEIVE THE HOLY SPIRIT
44 As Peter was saying these things, the Holy Spirit
fell upon all who were listening to the message.
45 The Jewish believers who came with Peter were
amazed that the gift of the Holy Spirit had been poured
out on the Gentiles, too.
46 For they heard them speaking in tongues and praising
God.
Then Peter asked,
47 “Can anyone object to their being baptized, now that
they have received the Holy Spirit just as we did?”
48 So he gave orders for them to be baptized in the
name of Jesus Christ. Afterward Cornelius asked him
to stay with them for several days.

PSALM 98
(UMH 818) (New International Version) NIV
Sing it! Celebrate it! Enter into the joy of God's
salvation. A song of praise for redeeming love is a
new song, a mystery hidden from ages and
generations. Converts sing a new song, very
different from what they had sung before. If the
grace of God has given us a new heart, it will put a
new song into our throats.1 Sing to the LORD a new song,
for he has done marvelous things;
his right hand and his holy arm
have worked salvation for him.
2 The LORD has made his salvation known
and revealed his righteousness to the nations.
3 He has remembered his love
and his faithfulness to the house of Israel;
all the ends of the earth have seen
the salvation of our God.
4 Shout for joy to the LORD, all the earth,
burst into jubilant song with music;
5 make music to the LORD with the harp,
with the harp and the sound of singing,
6 with trumpets and the blast of the ram's horn —
shout for joy before the LORD, the King.
7 Let the sea resound, and everything in it,
the world, and all who live in it.
8 Let the rivers clap their hands,
Let the mountains sing together for joy;
9 let them sing before the LORD,
for he comes to judge the earth.
He will judge the world in righteousness
and the peoples with equity.

1 JOHN 5:1-6
(New International Reader's Version) NIRV
Verses 1-5 go together in a "string of pearls" that
connects faith, overcoming the world, obedience,
and loving God through a deep relationship of trust
in Jesus Christ. John intends us to see that
"the real death of Jesus was the real life of men.
Verse 6 begins a different "string" (bringing together
baptism, Eucharist, witness, discipleship). Next
week's scripture addresses this more fully.FAITH IN THE SON OF GOD
1 Everyone who believes that Jesus is the Christ, is born
again because of what God has done. And everyone who
loves the Father, loves his children as well.
2 How do we know that we love God's children? We
know it when we love God and obey his commands.
3 Here is what it means to love God. It means that we
obey his commands. And his commands are not hard
to obey.
4 That's because everyone who is a child of God has
won the battle over the world. Our faith has won the
battle for us.
5 Who is it that has won the battle over the world? Only
the person who believes that Jesus is the Son of God.
6 Jesus Christ is the one who was baptized in water and
died on the cross. He wasn't just baptized in water. He
also died on the cross. The Holy Spirit has given a truthful
witness about him. That's because the Spirit is the truth.

JOHN 15:9-17
(New International Reader's Version) NIRV
Jesus reminds his disciples, who have become his
friends, that they did not choose him; he chose them
and appointed them to go and bear much fruit.
9 "Just as the Father has loved me, I have loved you.
Now remain in my love.
10 If you obey my commands, you will remain in my love.
In the same way, I have obeyed my Father's commands
and remain in his love.
11 I have told you this so that my joy will be in you. I also
want your joy to be complete.
12 "Here is my command. Love each other, just as I have
loved you.
13 No one has greater love than the one who gives his life
for his friends.
14 You are my friends if you do what I command.
15 "I do not call you servants anymore. Servants do not
know their master's business. Instead, I have called you
friends. I have told you everything I learned from my Father.
16 "You did not choose me. Instead, I chose you. I
appointed you to go and bear fruit. It is fruit that will last.
Then the Father will give you anything you ask for in my
name.
17 "Here is my command. Love one another."

FUTURE FOCUS —
MAY 25 - MEMORIAL DAY OBSERVED IN U.S.A.
The last Monday in May, is a day on the civil calendar
for remembering and honoring those who have given
their lives in battle. The day is also known as
Decoration Day for the custom of placing flags at the
graves of the patriotic dead. There is resonance with
the gospel reading: "No one has greater love than this,
to lay down one's life for one's friends."
Many of us have relatives and friends who have died
in battle, somewhere on this earth. Many times the
earthly remains are buried on or near that last battle
field. We have a need to pray for those passing souls,
and to pray for our own strength to carry on, and to
persevere.
War is an unspeakable, horrendous thing, but . . what
if an adversary had prevailed. Would we now be free
to worship in the church of our choice, in the manner
of our choice, in the country of our choice? Man can
have no greater love than this; to lay down his life
for his country - his freedoms - his pursuit of
happiness. Have we prevailed by the strength of man
alone? Or have we prevailed from the strength of spirit,
the strength of soul, the strength of attitude, the strength
of beliefs, the strength of God?
