20TH SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST
COLOR: GREEN

(Laity Sunday)
This year's theme is "Disciples Transforming the
World through Prayer."
As members together with you in the body of
Christ and in this congregation of The United
Methodist Church, we renew our covenant
faithfully to participate in the ministries of the
church by our prayers, our presence, our gifts, . . .

Our prayer practices critically affect our
discipleship. The time we spend in prayer (or the
lack thereof) is reflected in our lives. Think about
people you know whose prayer lives are
intentional and fruitful. They are the people to
whom you go with prayer requests. Sometimes
it is the pastor, sometimes not. There is something
about people with active prayer lives that gives
you confidence in their ability to communicate
with God. It should be more than the ability to use
flowery words and phrases. It is their sincere and
open conversation with the Lord and Giver of Life.

Our Scripture Readings are:
JOB 38:(1-7 & 34-41) 1-41

NEW LIVING TRANSLATION (NLT)
A voice from the whirlwind, like that of the "Great
and Terrible Oz,"answers Job and the "friends"

with a series of questions about their capacity to
create
or provide for the universe, the earth, and
its inhabitants.
What may seem like an endless
barrage of almost
taunting interrogations that
follow. Job had silenced, but
had not convinced
his friends. Elihu had silenced Job, but
had not
brought him to admit his guilt before God. It
pleased the Lord to interpose. The Lord, in this
discourse,
humbles Job, and brings him to
repent of his passionate
expressions concerning
God's providential dealings with
him; and this he
does, by calling upon Job to compare God's
being
from everlasting to everlasting, with his own time;
God's knowledge of all things, with his own
ignorance;
and God's almighty power, with his
own weakness.

JOB 38 THE LORD CHALLENGES JOB
1 Then the Lord answered Job from the whirlwind:
2 “Who is this that questions my wisdom
with such ignorant words?
3 Brace yourself like a man,
because I have some questions for you,
and you must answer them.
4 “Where were you when I laid the foundations of the earth?
Tell me, if you know so much.
5 Who determined its dimensions
and stretched out the surveying line?
6 What supports its foundations,
and who laid its cornerstone
7 as the morning stars sang together
and all the angels shouted for joy?
8 “Who kept the sea inside its boundaries
as it burst from the womb,
9 and as I clothed it with clouds
and wrapped it in thick darkness?
10 For I locked it behind barred gates,
limiting its shores.
11 I said, ‘This far and no farther will you come.
Here your proud waves must stop!’
12 “Have you ever commanded the morning to appear
and caused the dawn to rise in the east?13 Have you made daylight spread to the ends of the earth,
to bring an end to the night’s wickedness?
14 As the light approaches,
the earth takes shape like clay pressed beneath a seal;
it is robed in brilliant colors.
15 The light disturbs the wicked
and stops the arm that is raised in violence.
16 “Have you explored the springs from which the seas come?
Have you explored their depths?
17 Do you know where the gates of death are located?
Have you seen the gates of utter gloom?
18 Do you realize the extent of the earth?
Tell me about it if you know!
19 “Where does light come from,and where does darkness go?
20 Can you take each to its home?
Do you know how to get there?
21 But of course you know all this!
For you were born before it was all created,
and you are so very experienced!
22 “Have you visited the storehouses of the snow
or seen the storehouses of hail?23 (I have reserved them as weapons for the time of trouble,
for the day of battle and war.)
24 Where is the path to the source of light?
Where is the home of the east wind?
25 “Who created a channel for the torrents of rain?Who laid out the path for the lightning?
26 Who makes the rain fall on barren land,
in a desert where no one lives?
27 Who sends rain to satisfy the parched ground
and make the tender grass spring up?
28 “Does the rain have a father?
Who gives birth to the dew?
29 Who is the mother of the ice?
Who gives birth to the frost from the heavens?
30 For the water turns to ice as hard as rock,
and the surface of the water freezes.
31 “Can you direct the movement of the stars—
binding the cluster of the Pleiades
or loosening the cords of Orion?32 Can you direct the sequence of the seasons
or guide the Bear with her cubs across the heavens?
33 Do you know the laws of the universe?
Can you use them to regulate the earth?
34 “Can you shout to the clouds
and make it rain?
35 Can you make lightning appear
and cause it to strike as you direct?36 Who gives intuition to the heart
and instinct to the mind?
37 Who is wise enough to count all the clouds?Who can tilt the water jars of heaven
38 when the parched ground is dry
and the soil has hardened into clods?
39 “Can you stalk prey for a lioness
and satisfy the young lions’ appetites
40 as they lie in their dens
or crouch in the thicket?
41 Who provides food for the ravens
when their young cry out to God
and wander about in hunger?

PSALM 104:1-9, 24, 35c (UMH 826)
New International Version (NIV)
A hymn praising God's work in creation
PSALM 104

1 Praise the LORD, O my soul.
O LORD my God, you are very great;
you are clothed with splendor and majesty.
2 He wraps himself in light as with a garment;
he stretches out the heavens like a tent
3 and lays the beams of his upper chambers on
their waters.
He makes the clouds his chariot
and rides on the wings of the wind.
4 He makes winds his messengers,
flames of fire his servants.5 He set the earth on its foundations;
it can never be moved.
6 You covered it with the deep as with a garment;
the waters stood above the mountains.
7 But at your rebuke the waters fled,
at the sound of your thunder they took to flight;
8 they flowed over the mountains,
they went down into the valleys,
to the place you assigned for them.
9 You set a boundary they cannot cross;
never again will they cover the earth.
10 He makes springs pour water into the ravines;
it flows between the mountains.
11 They give water to all the beasts of the field;
the wild donkeys quench their thirst.
12 The birds of the air nest by the waters;they sing among the branches.13 He waters the mountains from his upper chambers;
the earth is satisfied by the fruit of his work.
14 He makes grass grow for the cattle,and plants for man to cultivate—
bringing forth food from the earth:15 wine that gladdens the heart of man,
oil to make his face shine,
and bread that sustains his heart.
16 The trees of the LORD are well watered,the cedars of Lebanon that he planted.
17 There the birds make their nests;
the stork has its home in the pine trees.
18 The high mountains belong to the wild goats;
the crags are a refuge for the coveys.
19 The moon marks off the seasons,
and the sun knows when to go down.
20 You bring darkness, it becomes night,
and all the beasts of the forest prowl.
21 The lions roar for their prey
and seek their food from God.
22 The sun rises, and they steal away;
they return and lie down in their dens.
23 Then man goes out to his work,
to his labor until evening.
24 How many are your works, O LORD!
In wisdom you made them all;
the earth is full of your creatures.
25 There is the sea, vast and spacious,
teeming with creatures beyond number—
living things both large and small.26 There the ships go to and fro,and the leviathan, which you formed to frolic there.
27 These all look to you
to give them their food at the proper time.
28 When you give it to them,
they gather it up;
when you open your hand,
they are satisfied with good things.
29 When you hide your face,
they are terrified;
when you take away their breath,
they die and return to the dust.
30 When you send your Spirit,
they are created,
and you renew the face of the earth.
31 May the glory of the LORD endure forever;
may the LORD rejoice in his works-
32 he who looks at the earth, and it trembles,
who touches the mountains, and they smoke.
33 I will sing to the LORD all my life;
I will sing praise to my God as long as I live.
34 May my meditation be pleasing to him,
as I rejoice in the LORD.
35 But may sinners vanish from the earth
and the wicked be no more.
Praise the LORD, O my soul.
Praise the LORD.

HEBREWS 5:1-10
New Living Translation (NLT)
Jesus exercised his high priesthood, established by God, through supplications, prayers, sufferings, and obedience to God.
1 Every high priest is a man chosen to represent other
people in their dealings with God. He presents their gifts
to God and offers sacrifices for their sins.
2 And he is able to deal gently with ignorant and wayward
people because he himself is subject to the same weaknesses.
3 That is why he must offer sacrifices for his own sins as
well as theirs.
4 And no one can become a high priest simply because he
wants such an honor. He must be called by God for this work,
just as Aaron was.
5 That is why Christ did not honor himself
by assuming he could become High Priest. No, he was chosen
by God, who said to him,
“You are my Son.
Today I have become your Father.”
6 And in another passage God said to him,
“You are a priest forever in the order of Melchizedek.”
7 While Jesus was here on earth, he offered prayers and
pleadings, with a loud cry and tears, to the one who could
rescue him from death. And God heard his prayers because
of his deep reverence for God.
8 Even though Jesus was God’s Son, he learned obedience
from the things he suffered.
9 In this way, God qualified him as a perfect High Priest,
and he became the source of eternal salvation for all those
who obey him.
10 And God designated him to be a High Priest in the order
of Melchizedek.

MARK 10:35-45 New Living Translation (NLT)
This is the boldest misinterpretation yet of
leadership and position in the kingdom of God
by disciples of Jesus. Leadership is service,
not honor; and position is gained through
suffering and God's initiative, not self-promotion
or favoritism.
CHRIST FORETELLS HIS SUFFERING Christ's going on with his undertaking for the
salvation of mankind, was, is, and will be, the
wonder of all his disciples. Worldly honor is a
glittering thing, with which the eyes of Christ's
own disciples have many times been dazzled.
We must have wisdom and grace to know how
to suffer with him; and we may trust him to
provide what the degrees of our glory shall be.
Christ shows them that dominion is generally
abused in the world. If Jesus gratifies all our
desires, we would desire fame and authority. We
would be unwilling to taste of his cup, and should
often be ruined by having all our prayers answered.
Jesus loves us, and will give his people what is
good for them.

JESUS TEACHES ABOUT SERVING OTHERS
35 Then James and John, the sons of Zebedee,
came over and spoke to him. “Teacher,” they said,
“we want you to do us a favor.”
36 “What is your request?” he asked.
37 They replied, “When you sit on your glorious
throne, we want to sit in places of honor next to you,
one on your right and the other on your left.”
38 But Jesus said to them, “You don’t know what you
are asking! Are you able to drink from the bitter cup
of suffering I am about to drink? Are you able to be
baptized with the baptism of suffering I must be
baptized with?”
39 “Oh yes,” they replied, “we are able!” Then Jesus
told them, “You will indeed drink from my bitter cup and
be baptized with my baptism of suffering.
40 But I have no right to say who will sit on my right
or my left. God has prepared those places for the ones
he has chosen.”
41 When the ten other disciples heard what James
and John had asked, they were indignant.
42 So Jesus called them together and said, “You know
that the rulers in this world lord it over their people, and
officials flaunt their authority over those under them.
43 But among you it will be different. Whoever wants
to be a leader among you must be your servant,
44 and whoever wants to be first among you must be
the slave of everyone else.
45 For even the Son of Man came not to be served
but to serve others and to give his life as a ransom
for many.”
