This is Hispanic Heritage Month. The dates
run from September 15th to October 15th.
• Presidential Proclamation - -
To honor the achievements of Hispanics in
America, Congress by Public Law 100-402,
as amended, has authorized and requested
the President to issue annually a proclamation
designating September 15 through October
15 as "National Hispanic Heritage Month."
• National Hispanic Heritage Month in
The United Methodist Church, gives local
congregations occasion to celebrate the
importance and contributions of the Hispanic
people to our culture and to our worship. This
is one of my favorite Hispanic songs in our
hymnal. It is sung quickly with great joy and
exuberance.

SCRIPTURE READINGS —
PROVERBS 31:10-31
† New International Reader's Version (NIRV)
In praise of the "model" married woman,
rooted in God, faithful and competent as the
manager of the household.

THE NOBLE WIFE

10 Who can find a noble wife?

She is worth far more than rubies.
11 Her husband trusts her completely.
She gives him all the important things he
needs.

12 She brings him good, not harm,
all the days of her life.
13 She chooses wool and flax.
She loves to work with her hands.
14 She is like the ships of traders.
She brings her food from far away.
15 She gets up while it is still dark.
She provides food for her family.
She also gives some to her female servants.
16 She considers a field and buys it.
She uses some of the money she earns to
plant a vineyard.

17 She gets ready to work hard.
Her arms are strong.
18 She sees that her trading earns a lot of money.
Her lamp doesn't go out at night.
19 With one hand she holds the wool.
With the other she spins the thread.
20 She opens her arms to those who are poor.
She reaches out her hands to those who are
needy.

21 When it snows, she's not afraid for her family.
All of them are dressed in the finest clothes.
22 She makes her own bed coverings.
She is dressed in fine linen and purple clothes.
23 Her husband is respected at the city gate.
There he takes his seat among the elders of
the land.

24 She makes linen clothes and sells them.
She supplies belts to the traders.
25 She puts on strength and honor as if they
were her clothes.

She can laugh at the days that are coming.
26 She speaks wisely.
She teaches faithfully.
27 She watches over family matters.
She is busy all the time.
28 Her children stand up and call her blessed.
Her husband also rises up, and praises her.
29 He says, "Many women do noble things.
But you are better than all the others."
30 Charm can fool you. Beauty fades.
But a woman who has respect for the Lord
should be praised.

31 Give her the reward she has earned.
Let everything she has done bring praise to
her at the city gate.

PSALM 1 (UMH 738)
† New International Reader's Version (NIRV)
A celebration of a way of life rooted in God
and fed by the "streams of water"
through
prayer and meditation on the word of God.

1 Blessed are those who do not walk in step with
the wicked
or stand in the way that sinners take
or sit in the company of mockers,
2 but who delight in the law of the LORD
and meditate on his law day and night.
3 They are like a tree planted by streams of
water,
which yields its fruit in season
and whose leaf does not wither—
whatever they do prospers.
4 Not so the wicked!
They are like chaff
that the wind blows away.
5 Therefore the wicked will not stand in the
judgment,
nor sinners in the assembly of the
righteous.

6 For the LORD watches over the way of the
righteous,

but the way of the wicked will be destroyed.

• Here is the version in “THE MESSAGE”
• Not at all poetic - - -
• right to the point - - - It is what it is!

PSALM 1
(THE MESSAGE)

1 How well God must like you - you don't hang
out at Sin Saloon, you don't slink along Dead-End
Road, you don't go to Smart-Mouth College.

2 Instead you thrill to God's Word, you chew on
Scripture day and night.

3 You're a tree replanted in Eden, bearing fresh
fruit every month, Never dropping a leaf, always
in blossom.

4 You're not at all like the wicked, who are mere
windblown dust -

5 Without defense in court, unfit company for
innocent people.

6 God charts the road you take. The road they
take is Skid Row.

JAMES 3:13-18, 4:1-3, 7-8
LIVE BY WISDOM GROUNDEDNESS

† New International Reader's Version (NIRV)
Those who live from wisdom from above live
in peace — responding graciously toward
others, resisting the selfish willfulness of
the
flesh, and drawing near to God.

JAMES 3:13-18
TWO KINDS OF WISDOM

13 Are any of you wise and understanding? You
should show it by living a good life. Wise people
aren't proud when they do good works.

14 But suppose your hearts are jealous and
bitter. Suppose you are concerned only about
getting ahead. Don't brag about it. Don't say no
to the truth.

15 Wisdom like that doesn't come down from
heaven. It belongs to the earth. It doesn't come
from the Holy Spirit. It comes from the devil.

16 Are you jealous? Are you concerned only
about getting ahead? Then your life will be a
mess. You will be doing all kinds of evil things.

17 But the wisdom that comes from heaven is
pure. That's the most important thing about it.
And that's not all. It also loves peace. It thinks
about others. It obeys. It is full of mercy and
good fruit. It is fair. It doesn't pretend to be what
it is not.

18 Those who make peace should plant peace
like a seed. If they do, it will produce a crop of
right living.

JAMES 4:1-3
OBEY GOD

1 Why do you fight and argue among yourselves?

Isn't it because of your sinful longings?
They fight inside you.

2 You want something, but you can't get it. You
kill and want what others have. But you can't
have what you want. You argue and fight. You
don't have what you want, because you don't
ask God.

3 When you do ask for something, you don't
receive it. Why? Because you ask for the wrong
reason. You want to spend your money on your
sinful pleasures.

JAMES 4:7-8
7 So obey God. Stand up to the devil. He will
run away from you.

8 Come near to God, and he will come near to
you. Wash your hands, you sinners. Make your
hearts pure, you who can't make up your minds.

THE MESSAGE VERSION:
JAMES 3:13-18
13 Do you want to be counted wise, to build a
reputation for wisdom? Here's what you do:
Live well, live wisely, live humbly. It's the way
you live, not the way you talk, that counts.

14 Mean-spirited ambition isn't wisdom. Boasting
that you are wise isn't wisdom. Twisting the truth
to make yourselves sound wise isn't wisdom.

15 It's the furthest thing from wisdom - it's animal
cunning, devilish conniving.

16 Whenever you're trying to look better than
others or get the better of others, things fall apart
and everyone ends up at the others' throats.

17 Real wisdom, God's wisdom, begins with a
holy life and is characterized by getting along with
others. It is gentle and reasonable, overflowing
with mercy and blessings, not hot one day and
cold the next, not two-faced.

18 You can develop a healthy, robust community
that lives right with God and enjoy its results only
if you do the hard work of getting along with each
other, treating each other with dignity and honor.

JAMES 4:1-3
1
Where do you think all these appalling wars
and quarrels come from? Do you think they
just
happen? Think again. They come about
because
you want your own way, and fight
for it deep inside
yourselves.

2 You lust for what you don't have and are willing
to kill to get it. You want what isn't yours and will
risk violence to get your hands on it.

3 And why not? Because you know you'd be
asking for what you have no right to. You're
spoiled children, each wanting your own way.

JAMES 4:7-8
7
So let God work his will in you. Yell a loud
no
to the Devil and watch him scamper.

8 Say a quiet yes to God and he'll be there in
no time. Quit dabbling in sin. Purify your inner
life. Quit playing the field.

MARK 9:30-37
New International Reader's Version (NIRV)

Jesus teaches his disciples a second time
that he will face betrayal, execution, and
resurrection. For the second time as well, the
disciples demonstrate they do not understand
his teaching. They continue to argue about
who is the greatest. Jesus places a child
already in their midst at the center of their
attention to remind them that whoever
welcomes such a child welcomes Jesus and
the One who sent him.

30 They left that place and passed through Galilee.
Jesus did not want anyone to know where they
were.

31 That was because he was teaching his disciples.
He said to them, "The Son of Man is going to be
handed over to men. They will kill him. After three
days he will rise from the dead."

32 But they didn't understand what he meant.
And they were afraid to ask him about it.

Who Is the Most Important Person?
33 Jesus and his disciples came to a house in
Capernaum. There he asked them, "What were
you arguing about on the road?"
34 But they kept quiet. On the way, they had
argued about which one of them was the most
important person.

35 Jesus sat down and called for the Twelve
to come to him. Then he said, "If you want to
be first, you must be the very last. You must be
the servant of everyone."

36 Jesus took a little child and had the child
stand among them. Then he took the child in
his arms. He said to them,

37 "Anyone who welcomes one of these little
children in my name welcomes me. And anyone
who welcomes me doesn't welcome only me but
also the One who sent me."
