OUR WEEK —JUNE 10TH TO JUNE 16TH

REMINDERS —
WEDNESDAY, JUNE 6TH —
JUNE 6, 1944 MARKED
THE WORLD WAR II
D-DAY INVASION OF NORMANDY, FRANCE.

68 YEARS AGO, THIS YEAR.The Allied Forces working together were British,
Canadian, and American with General Dwight
D. Eisenhower as Supreme Commander.
• The operation was the largest amphibious
invasion
executed in world history.
It was accomplished with:
6,000 SHIPS AT SEA,
13,000 AIR CRAFT OVERHEAD,
18,000 AIRBORNE TROOPS, AND
OVER 176,000 GROUND TROOPS
LANDING ON JUNE 6, 1944.
THE TROOPS BEGAN IN ENGLAND AND
ENDED ALONG A 50-MILE STRETCH OF
NORMANDY COAST IN FIVE BEACH SECTORS:
OMAHA, UTAH, GOLD, JUNO, AND SWORD
BEACHES.
OPERATION OVERLORD was the codename for
the Allied invasion of northwest Europe. The
assault phase of Operation Overlord, known as
OPERATION NEPTUNE, began on D-Day June 6
and ended on June 30. By the 30th. The American,
British and Canadian Allies had established a firm
foothold in Normandy.
OMAHA BEACH WAS VERY HEAVILY FORTIFIED,
with high bluffs defended by bunkers of mortars,
machine guns, and artillery. Early aerial shelling and
bombardment of the bunkers proved to be absolutely
useless.
Difficult navigation caused the majority of landing craft
to drift eastward, missing their assigned landing zones.
The initial assault took very heavy casualties.
Of the 16 tanks that landed on the shores of Omaha
Beach only 2 survived the landing. The official record
states that "within 10 minutes of the ramps being
lowered, the first company had become motionless,
leaderless and incapable of action. Every officer and
sergeant had been killed or wounded. It became a
struggle for survival and rescue". American
casualties
on D-Day numbered over 5,000 out of
50,000 men,
most in the first hours.
Operation Overlord began on D-Day, and
continued until Allied forces crossed the River
Seine on August 19, 1944."
• After the abysmal beings, over 100,000 soldiers
began the exhausting march across Europe to
defeat
the Nazi aggressors.

• Those were very difficult days. The devil had to be
stopped and Allied Forces did not hesitate. I had
relatives who served in Europe and they would
never speak of it. Little wonder!
How rude of me to ask.
What causes any mortal man to evolve a deity
complex, believing absolutely that he should be
dictator over all the land? Madness!

SECOND SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST

COLOR: GREEN

SCRIPTURE READINGS:
This week's Old Testament, Epistle and Gospels
are not
intentionally connected to one another in
any way.

1 SAMUEL 8:4-20 (11:14-15)
1 SAMUEL 8:4-20
(New International Reader's Version)
The elders of the people ask Samuel to appoint a
king over them so they will be like the other
nations. Samuel lets them know exactly what a
king will take from them. He will take your land,
he will take your animals and crops, he will take
your freedom and make you a slave to his own
cause.

4 So all of the elders of Israel gathered together.
They came to Samuel at Ramah.
5 They said to him, "You are old. Your sons don't
live as you do. So appoint a king to lead us. We
want a king just like the kings all of the other nations
have."
6 Samuel wasn't pleased when they said, "Give us a
king to lead us." So he prayed to the Lord.
7 The Lord told him, "Listen to everything the people
are saying to you. You are not the one they have
turned their backs on. I am the one they do not want
as their king.
8 They are doing just as they have always done.
They have deserted me and served other gods. They
have done that from the time I brought them up out
of Egypt until this very day. Now they are deserting
you too.
9 "Let them have what they want. But give them a
strong warning. Let them know what the king who
rules over them will do."
10 Samuel told the people who were asking him for
a king everything the Lord had said.
11 Samuel told them, "Here's what the king who
rules over you will do. He will take your sons. He'll
make them serve with his chariots and horses. They
will run in front of his chariots.
12 He'll choose some of your sons to be
commanders of thousands of men. Some will be
commanders of fifty. Others will have to plow his
fields and gather his crops. Still others will have to
make weapons of war and parts for his chariots.
13 "He'll also take your daughters. Some will have to
make perfume. Others will be forced to cook or bake.
14 "He will take away your best fields and vineyards
and olive groves. He'll give them to his own attendants.
15 He will take a tenth of your grain and a tenth of
your grapes. He'll give it to his officials and attendants.
16 He will also take your male and female servants.
He'll take your best cattle and donkeys. He'll use all
of them any way he wants to.
17 "He will take a tenth of your sheep and goats.
You yourselves will become his slaves.
18 "When that time comes, you will cry out for help
because of the king you have chosen. But the Lord
won't answer you at that time."
19 In spite of what Samuel said, the people refused
to listen to him. "No!" they said.
"We want a king to rule over us.
20 Then we'll be like all of the other nations. We'll
have a king to lead us. He'll go out at the head of our
armies and fight our battles."

1 SAMUEL 11:14-15
(New International Reader's Version)
14 Then Samuel said to the people, "Come on. Let's
go to Gilgal.
There we'll agree to have Saul as our king."
15 So all of the people went to Gilgal. There, with
the Lord as witness, they agreed to have Saul as
their king. There they sacrificed friendship offerings
to the Lord. And there Saul and all of the people of
Israel celebrated with great joy.PSALM 138 (UMH 853)
(The Message)
The psalm praises God as source of life and
protection for the people.

DAVID'S PSALM
1-3 Thank you! Everything in me says "Thank you!"
Angels listen as I sing my thanks.
I kneel in worship facing your holy temple
and say it again: "Thank you!"
Thank you for your love,
thank you for your faithfulness;
Most holy is your name,
most holy is your Word.
The moment I called out, you stepped in;
you made my life large with strength.

4-6 When they hear what you have to say, God,
all earth's kings will say "Thank you."
They'll sing of what you've done:
"How great the glory of God!"
And here's why: God, high above, sees far below;
no matter the distance, he knows everything about us.

7-8 When I walk into the thick of trouble,
keep me alive in the angry turmoil.
With one hand
strike my foes,
With your other hand
save me.
Finish what you started in me, God.
Your love is eternal—don't quit on me now.

2 CORINTHIANS 4:13-5:1
(New International Reader's Version)
We pick up in the middle of Paul's extended
argument for the validity of his claim to authority
among the Christians in Corinth. Here, Paul
notes that the kind of suffering and physical
challenges he faces are signs precisely of the
death of Christ at work in him.

13 It is written, "I believed, and so I have spoken."
—(Psalm 116:10) With that same spirit of faith we
also believe. And we also speak.
14 We know that God raised the Lord Jesus from
the dead. And he will also raise us up with Jesus.
He will bring us with you to God in heaven.
15 All of that is for your benefit. God's grace is
reaching more and more people. So they will
become more and more thankful. They will give
glory to God.
16 We don't give up. Our bodies are becoming
weaker and weaker. But our spirits are being
renewed day by day.
17 Our troubles are small. They last only for a
short time. But they are earning for us a glory that
will last forever. It is greater than all our troubles.
18 So we don't spend all our time looking at what
we can see. Instead, we look at what we can't see.
What can be seen lasts only a short time. But what
can't be seen will last forever.
2 CORINTHIANS 5
OUR HOME IN HEAVEN
1 We know that the earthly tent we live in will be
destroyed. But we have a building made by God.
It is a house in heaven that lasts forever. Human
hands did not build it.

MARK 3:20-35
(New International Reader's Version)
Jesus' power has become so great and wild that
some begin to accuse him of casting out demons
by the power of Satan. Even his family has come
to rescue him. Jesus names blasphemy against
the Holy Spirit as the only unforgivable sin.

JESUS AND BEELZEBUB
20 Jesus entered a house. Again a crowd gathered.
It was so large that Jesus and his disciples were not
even able to eat.21 His family heard about this. So they went to take
charge of him. They said, "He is out of his mind."
22 Some teachers of the law were there. They had
come down from Jerusalem. They said, "He is
controlled by Beelzebub! He is driving out demons
by the power of the prince of demons."
23 So Jesus called them over and spoke to them by
using stories. He said, "How can Satan drive out
Satan?
24 If a kingdom fights against itself, it can't stand.
25 If a family is divided, it can't stand.
26 And if Satan fights against himself, and his
helpers are divided, he can't stand.
That is the end of him.
27 In fact, none of you can enter a strong man's
house and just take what the man owns. You must
first tie him up. Then you can rob his house.
28 "What I'm about to tell you is true. Everyone's sins
and evil words against God will be forgiven.
29 But anyone who speaks evil things against the
Holy Spirit will never be forgiven.
His guilt will last forever."

30 Jesus said this because the teachers of the law
were saying, "He has an evil spirit."
Jesus' Mother and Brothers
31 Jesus' mother and brothers came and stood
outside. They sent someone in to get him.
32 A crowd was sitting around Jesus. They told him,
"Your mother and your brothers are outside. They are
looking for you."
33 "Who is my mother? Who are my brothers?" he
asked.
34 Then Jesus looked at the people sitting in a circle
around him. He said, "Here is my mother! Here are
my brothers!
35 Anyone who does what God wants is my brother
or sister or mother."
