SCRIPTURE READINGS —
ISAIAH 6:1-8
(AMPLIFIED BIBLE)
The temple furnishings come suddenly alive for
Isaiah as he experiences the realities behind the
symbols, living cherubim ascribing triple
holiness to "Lord God of Hosts." In that
encounter, he hears himself claimed and called
by the Holy, Holy, Holy One.

1 IN the year that King Uzziah died, in a vision I saw
the Lord sitting upon a throne, high and lifted up,
and the skirts of His train filled the most holy part of
the temple.
2 Above Him stood the seraphim; each had six
wings: with two each, covering his own face, and with
two each, covering his feet, and with two each, flew.3 And one cried to another and said, “Holy, holy, holy
is the Lord of hosts; the whole earth is full of His glory.”4 And the foundations of the thresholds shook at the
voice of him who cried, and the house was filled with
smoke.
5 Then said I, Woe is me! For I am undone and
ruined, because I am a man of unclean lips, and I
dwell in the midst of a people of unclean lips; for my
eyes have seen the King, the Lord of hosts!
6 Then flew one of the seraphim [heavenly beings]
to me, having a live coal in his hand which he had
taken with tongs from off the altar;
7 And with it he touched my mouth and said, “Behold,
this has touched your lips; your iniquity and guilt are
taken away, and your sin is completely atoned for
and forgiven.”
8 Also I heard the voice of the Lord, saying, “Whom
shall I send? And who will go for Us?” Then said I,“Here am I; send me.”

PSALM 29 (UMH 761)
(NEW INTERNATIONAL READER'S VERSION)
A PSALM OF DAVID.

1 Praise the Lord, you mighty angels.
Praise the Lord for his glory and strength.
2 Praise the Lord for the glory that belongs to him.
Worship the Lord because of his beauty and holiness.
3 The voice of the Lord is heard over the waters.
The God of glory thunders.
The Lord thunders over the mighty waters.
4 The voice of the Lord is powerful.
The voice of the Lord is majestic.
5 The voice of the Lord breaks the cedar trees. The Lord breaks the cedars of Lebanon into pieces.
6 He makes the mountains of Lebanon skip like a calf.He makes Mount Hermon jump like a young wild ox.
7 The voice of the Lord strikes with flashes of
lightning.8 The voice of the Lord shakes the desert.
The Lord shakes the Desert of Kadesh.
9 The voice of the Lord twists the oak trees.
It strips the forests bare.
And in his temple everyone cries out, "Glory!"
10 The Lord on his throne rules over the flood.
The Lord rules from his throne as King forever.
11 The Lord gives strength to his people.
The Lord blesses his people with peace.

ROMANS 8:12-17
(AMPLIFIED BIBLE)
If we have received the Spirit of God, we can and
should live from the power of the Spirit, even —
and especially — in the face of suffering.

12 So then, brethren, we are debtors, but not to the
flesh (we are not obligated to our carnal nature), to
live a life ruled by the standards set up by the
dictates of the flesh.
13 For if you live according to the dictates of the
flesh, you will surely die. But if through the power of
the Holy
Spirit you are putting to death evil deeds prompted
by the body, you shall really and genuinely live forever.
14 For all who are led by the Spirit of God are sons
of God.
15 For the Spirit which you have now received is not
a spirit of slavery to put you once more in bondage to
fear, but you have received the Spirit of adoption in
the bliss of which we cry, Abba (Father)! Father!
16 The Spirit Himself testifies together with our own
spirit, assuring us that we are children of God.
17 And if we are His children, then we are His heirs
also: heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ sharing
His inheritance with Him; only we must share His
suffering if we are to share His glory.

JOHN 3:1-17
(NEW KING JAMES VERSION)
Jesus uses two different metaphors to help
Nicodemus understand life in the kingdom of
God — being born again by the Spirit and the
story of the serpent in the
wilderness.
THE NEW BIRTH
1 There was a man of the Pharisees named
Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews.2 This man came to Jesus by night and said to Him,
“Rabbi, we know that You are a teacher come from
God; for no one can do these signs that You do
unless God is with him.
3 Jesus answered and said to him, “Most assuredly,
I say to you, unless one is born again, he cannot see
the kingdom of God.”
4 Nicodemus said to Him, “How can a man be born
when he is old? Can he enter a second time into
his mother’s womb and be born?”
5 Jesus answered, “Most assuredly, I say to you,
unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot
enter the kingdom of God.6 That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that
which is born of the Spirit is spirit.
7 Do not marvel that I said to you,
‘You must be born again.’
8 The wind blows where it wishes, and you hear the
sound of it, but cannot tell where it comes from and
where it goes. So is everyone who is
born of the Spirit.”
9 Nicodemus answered and said to Him, “How can
these things be?”
10 Jesus answered and said to him, “Are you the
teacher of Israel, and do not know these things?
11 Most assuredly, I say to you, We speak what We
know and testify what We have seen, and you do
not receive Our witness.
12 If I have told you earthly things and you do not
believe, how will you believe if I tell you
heavenly things?
13 No one has ascended to heaven but He who
came down from heaven, that is, the Son of Man
who is in heaven.
14 And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the
wilderness, even so must the Son of Man be
lifted up,
15 that whoever believes in Him should not perish
but have eternal life.
16 For God so loved the world that He gave His
only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him
should not perish but have everlasting life.
17 For God did not send His Son into the world to
condemn the world, but that the world through Him
might be saved.
