SCRIPTURE READINGS
HAGGAI 1:15b–2:9
Haggai is among the post-exilic prophets called
by
God to encourage the people who had returned
to
Judah after exile in Babylon, beginning in 739.
When the people returned, they found Jerusalem
a
mass of ruins. The walls were torn down. The
temple
was demolished. It was a depressing mess.
Through
Haggai, God promises to restore the
splendor of the
Lord's house and tells the leaders
to take courage.

• • •
Our world is facing comparable destruction. At this

writing, people in Pakistan are starting to pick up
their lives after devastating floods; people in Haiti
are trying to rebuild after massive earthquakes;
and many disasters, natural and human-caused,
have left wreckage and ruin in their wake in the
U.S. from flooding,
oil spills, and wildfires out of control. Then there is the rebuilding people in many
places face because of war.
People all over the planet right now know what it
means to face catastrophic destruction, and many
wonder whether rebuilding is even possible.

HAGGAI 1:15
(The Message)
15 This happened on the twenty-fourth day of the
sixth month in the second year of King Darius.

HAGGAI 2:1-9
(The Message)
1 On the twenty-first day of the seventh month, the
Word of God came through the prophet Haggai:
"Tell Governor Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel and High
Priest Joshua son of Jehozadak
2 and all the people:
3 'Is there anyone here who saw the Temple the way it
used to be, all glorious? And what do you see now?
Not much, right?
4 "'So get to work, Zerubbabel!' - God is speaking.
"'Get to work, Joshua son of Jehozadak - high priest!'
"'Get to work, all you people!' - God is speaking.
5 'Put into action the word I covenanted with you when
you left Egypt. I'm living and breathing among you right
now. Don't be timid. Don't hold back.'
6 "This is what God-of-the-Angel-Armies said: 'Before
you know it, I will shake up sky and earth,
ocean and fields.
7 And I'll shake down all the godless nations. They'll
bring bushels of wealth and I will fill this Temple with
splendor.' God-of-the-Angel-Armies says so.
8 'I own the silver, I own the gold.' Decree of
God-of-the-Angel-Armies.
9 "'This Temple is going to end up far better than it
started out,
a glorious beginning but an even more
glorious finish: a place in which I will hand out
wholeness and holiness.'
Decree of God-of-the-Angel-Armies."

PSALM 145:1-5, 17-21
(The Message)
1 I lift you high in praise, my God, O my King! and
I'll bless your name into eternity.

2
I'll bless you every day, and keep it up from now
to eternity.

3
God is magnificent; he can never be praised
enough. There are no boundaries to his greatness.
4 Generation after generation stands in awe of your
work; each one tells stories of your mighty acts.
5 Your beauty and splendor have everyone talking;
I compose songs on your wonders.

PSALM 145: 17-21
(The Message)
17 Everything God does is right - the trademark on all
his works is love.

18
God's there, listening for all who pray, for all who
pray and mean it.

19
He does what's best for those who fear him - hears
them call out, and saves them.
20 God sticks by all who love him, but it's all over for
those who don't.
21 My mouth is filled with God's praise. Let everything
living bless him, bless his holy name from now to
eternity!

2 THESSALONIANS 2:1-5, 13-17
(The Message)
Some had gotten the message, somehow, that
Christ
had already returned, that the world was
about to end
and perhaps they had missed out.
Paul replies to those
concerns that this is not
Christian teaching at all. Paul
redirects their
attention from their fears about the future
toward
concrete action in the here and now.

2 THESSALONIANS 2:1-5
1 Now, friends, read these next words carefully. Slow
down and don't go jumping to conclusions regarding
the day when our Master, Jesus Christ, will come back
and we assemble to welcome him.
2 Don't let anyone shake you up or get you excited
over some breathless report or rumored letter from me
that the day of the Master's arrival has come and gone.
3 Don't fall for any line like that. 4 He'll defy and then take over every so-called god or
altar. Having cleared away the opposition, he'll then set
himself up in God's Temple as "God Almighty."
5 Don't you remember me going over all this in detail
when I was with you? Are your memories that short?
2 THESSALONIANS 13-17
13 Meanwhile, we've got our hands full continually
thanking God for you, our good friends - so loved by
God! God picked you out as his from the very start.
Think of it: included in God's original plan of salvation
by the bond of faith in the living truth.
14 This is the life of the Spirit he invited you to through
the Message we delivered, in which you get in on the
glory of our Master, Jesus Christ.
15 So, friends, take a firm stand, feet on the ground and head high. Keep a tight grip
on what you were taught, whether in personal
conversation or by our letter.
16 May Jesus himself and God our Father, who
reached out in love and surprised you with gifts of
unending help and confidence,
17 put a fresh heart in you, invigorate your work,
enliven your speech.
———————————————————————— LUKE 20:27-38
(The Message)
The Sadducees were religious conservatives who
did
not accept "innovations" brought into Jewish
theology
following the exile in Babylon. They held
to the belief
that the Torah (the five books attributed
to Moses) was
the sufficient core for theology, and
that anything not
established in Torah was not to be
taught as doctrine.
The Sadducees question Jesus
about the Resurrection.
Jesus traps them in their
own trap.

LUKE 20:27-38
27 Some Sadducees came up. This is the Jewish
party that denies any possibility of resurrection.
They asked,
28 "Teacher, Moses wrote us that if a man dies and
leaves a wife but no child, his brother is obligated to
take the widow to wife and get her with child.
29 Well, there once were seven brothers. The first
took a wife. He died childless.
30 The second married her and died, 31 then the third, and eventually all seven had their
turn, but no child.
32 After all that, the wife died. 33 That wife, now - in the resurrection whose wife
is she? All seven married her."
34 Jesus said, "Marriage is a major preoccupation
here,
35 but not there. Those who are included in the
resurrection of the dead will no longer be concerned
with marriage
36 nor, of course, with death. They will have better
things to think about, if you can believe it. All
ecstasies and intimacies then will be with God.
37 Even Moses exclaimed about resurrection at the
burning bush, saying, 'God: God of Abraham,
God of Isaac, God of Jacob!'
38 God isn't the God of dead men, but of the living.
To him all are alive."
