Sixth Sunday after Pentecost

OUR SCRIPTURE READINGS ARE:

2 SAMUEL 6:1-5, 12b-19

Now David is settled in the throne, the honor
of the ark begins to revive. Some 30,000
chosen men of Israel accompany David to
bring the ark of the covenant to Jerusalem
In two stages: Baale-judah to Obed-edom,
and then Obed-edom to Jerusalem.
The
journey takes several months, with a
three-month hiatus in the middle. This was
because one of the cartmen (Uzzah) was
killed by touching the ark (verses 6-11).

On the final leg, David leads the procession
while dancing, wearing only a "linen ephod."

NEW LIVING TRANSLATION (NLT
)

2 SAMUEL 6:1-5
MOVING THE ARK TO JERUSALEM

1 Then David again gathered all the elite troops
in Israel, 30,000 in all.
2 He led them to Baalah of Judah to bring back
the Ark of God, which bears the name of the Lord
of Heaven’s Armies, who is enthroned between the
cherubim.

3 They placed the Ark of God on a new cart and
brought it from Abinadab’s house, which was on
a hill. Uzzah and Ahio, Abinadab’s sons, were
guiding the cart as it left the house,
4 carrying the Ark of God. Ahio walked in front of
the Ark.

5 David and the people of Israel were celebrating
before the Lord, singing songs and playing the
musical instruments—lyres, harps, tambourines,
castanets, and cymbals.

2 SAMUEL 12b-19
12 Then King David was told,
“The Lord has blessed Obed-edom’s household
and everything he has because of the Ark of God.”
So David went there and brought the Ark of God
from the house of Obed-edom to the City of David
with great celebration.

13 After the men who were carrying the Ark of the
Lord had gone six steps, David sacrificed a bull and
a fattened calf.

14 David danced before the Lord with all his might,
wearing a priestly garment.

15 So David and all the people of Israel brought up
the Ark of the Lord with shouts of joy and the
blowing of rams’ horns.
MICHAL’S CONTEMPT FOR DAVID
16 But as the Ark of the Lord entered the City of
David, Michal, the daughter of Saul, looked down
from her window. When she saw King David
leaping and dancing before the Lord,
she was filled with contempt for him.
17 They brought the Ark of the Lord and set it in its
place inside the special tent David had prepared for
it. And David sacrificed burnt offerings and peace
offerings to the Lord.

18 When he had finished his sacrifices, David
blessed the people in the name of the Lord of
Heaven’s Armies.

19 Then he gave to every Israelite man and woman
in the crowd a loaf of bread, a cake of dates, and a
cake of raisins. Then all the people returned to their
homes.

PSALM 24 (UMH 755)
NEW LIVING TRANSLATION (NLT)
We ourselves are not our own;
our bodies, our souls, are not.
Even those of the children of
men are God's.

PSALM 24
A psalm of David.
1 The earth is the Lord’s, and everything in it.
The world and all its people belong to him.
2 For he laid the earth’s foundation on the
seas and built it on the ocean depths.

3 Who may climb the mountain of the
Lord? Who may stand in his holy place?
4 Only those whose hands and hearts are
pure, who do not worship idols and never
tell lies.
5 They will receive the Lord’s blessing
and have a right relationship with God
their savior.
6 Such people may seek you and worship
in your presence, O God of Jacob.

7 Open up, ancient gates!
Open up, ancient doors,
and let the King of glory enter.
8 Who is the King of glory?
The Lord, strong and mighty;
the Lord, invincible in battle.
9 Open up, ancient gates!
Open up, ancient doors,
and let the King of glory enter.
10 Who is the King of glory?
The Lord of Heaven’s Armies—
he is the King of glory.

EPHESIANS 1:3-14
NEW INTERNATIONAL
READER'S VERSION (NIRV)

Paul says that the Holy Spirit given to
God's
children is in earnest of the
inheritance that he
will bestow upon
them.

GOD GIVES SPIRITUAL BLESSINGS
3 Give praise to the God and Father of our
Lord Jesus Christ. He has blessed us with
every spiritual blessing. Those blessings come
from the heavenly world. They belong to us
because webelong to Christ.

4 God chose us to belong to Christ before
the world was created. He chose us to be
holy and without blame in his eyes. He loved
us.
5 So he decided long ago to adopt us as
his children. He did it because of what Jesus
Christ has done. It pleased God to do it.
6 All those things bring praise to his glorious
grace. God freely gave us his grace because
of the One he loves.

7 We have been set free because of what Christ
has done. Through his blood our sins have been
forgiven. We have been set free because God's
grace is so rich.
8 He poured his grace on us by giving us great
wisdom and understanding.

9 He showed us the mystery of his plan. It was
in keeping with what he wanted to do. It was what
he had planned through Christ.
10 It will all come about when history has been
completed. God will then bring together all things
in heaven and on earth under one ruler.
The ruler is Christ.

11 We were also chosen to belong to him. God
decided to choose us long ago in keeping with his
plan. He works out everything to fit his plan
and purpose.
12 We were the first to put our hope in Christ.
We were chosen to bring praise to his glory.

13 You also became believers in Christ. That
happened when you heard the message of truth.
It was the good news about how you could be saved.
When you believed, he marked you with a seal.
The seal is the Holy Spirit that he promised.

14 The Spirit marks us as God's own. We can now
be sure that someday we will receive all that God
has promised. That will happen after God sets all
of his people completely free. All of those things will
bring praise to his glory.

MARK 6:14-29
(New Living Translation) NLV

THE DEATH OF JOHN THE BAPTIST
14 Herod Antipas, the king, soon heard about
Jesus, because everyone was talking about him.
Some were saying, “This must be John the Baptist
raised from the dead. That is why he can do such
miracles.”
15 Others said, “He’s the prophet Elijah.” Still others
said, “He’s a prophet like the other great prophets
of the past.”

16 When Herod heard about Jesus, he said, “John,
the man I beheaded, has come back from the dead.”

17 For Herod had sent soldiers to arrest and imprison
John as a favor to Herodias. She had been his brother
Philip’s wife, but Herod had married her.
18 John had been telling Herod, “It is against God’s
law for you to marry your brother’s wife.”
19 So Herodias bore a grudge against John and
wanted to kill him. But without Herod’s approval she
was powerless,
20 for Herod respected John; and knowing that he
was a good and holy man, he protected him. Herod
was greatly disturbed whenever he talked with John,
but even so, he liked to listen to him.

21 Her chance finally came on Herod’s birthday.
He gave a party for his high government officials,
army officers, and the leading citizens of Galilee.
22 Then his daughter, also named Herodias, came
in and performed a dance that greatly pleased
Herod and his guests. “Ask me for anything you like,”
the king said to the girl, “and I will give it to you.”
23 He even vowed, “I will give you whatever you ask,
up to half my kingdom!”

24 She went out and asked her mother, “What
should I ask for?”
Her mother told her,
“Ask for the head of John the Baptist!”

25 So the girl hurried back to the king
and told him, “I want the head of John
the Baptist, right now, on a tray!”

26 Then the king deeply regretted what
he had said; but because of the vows he
had made in front of his guests, he could
not refuse her.
27 So he immediately sent an executioner
to the prison to cut off John’s head and
bring it to him. The soldier beheaded John
in the prison,
28 brought his head on a tray, and gave
it to the girl, who took it to her mother.
29 When John’s disciples heard what had
happened, they came to get his body and
buried it in a tomb.
