▶SUNDAY, JUNE 19TH —
TRINITY SUNDAY FIRST SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST
COLOR: WHITE
Today is Trinity Sunday, the first Sunday in the
Ordinary Time after Eastertide. It is the only Sunday
of the year focused on a doctrine. It would be most
appropriate to incorporate the most ecumenically
shared statement of the Trinitarian faith in worship
today — The Nicene Creed (UMH 880).
The Nicene Creed has been the most regularly
confessed creed in Sunday Christian worship since
it was first professed at the Council of Nicaea on
June 19, 325 AD.

THE NICENE CREED
We believe in one God,
the Father, the Almighty,
maker of heaven and earth,
of all that is, seen and unseen.

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ,
the only Son of God,
eternally begotten of the Father,
God from God, Light from Light,
true God from true God,
begotten, not made,
of one Being with the Father.
through him all things were made.
For us and for our salvation
he came down from heaven;
by the power of the Holy Spirit
he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary,
and became truly human.
For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate;
he suffered death and was buried.
On the third day he rose again
in accordance with the Scriptures;
he ascended into heaven
and is seated at the right hand of the Father.
He will come again in glory to judge the living
and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end.

We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, giver of life,
who proceeds from the Father and the Son.
Who with the Father and the Son
is worshiped and glorified,
who has spoken through the Prophets.
We believe in one holy catholic* & apostolic Church.
We acknowledge one baptism
for the forgiveness of sins.
We look for the resurrection of the dead,
and the life of the world to come. Amen.
This translation is the version in the (1989)
United Methodist Hymnal.

★ This is Peace with Justice Sunday ★
The peace, justice, and love we know in this Triune
God cannot be contained in any place of worship. It
demands to be let out, to roll down like waters, to
flow like a mighty stream. So let justice flow in our
worship today! Pray it down! Pray it fervently, with
full voices. Don't just collect an offering! Be an offering.

the Congo (DRC) is the largest persistent violator,

THIS IS FATHER'S DAY!A 21st Century Prayer for Father's Day
• • Safiyah Fosua
We thank you for fathers near
Fathers with strong arms
And fathers with feeble knees —

Present at the table, and the bathtub,
and at bedtime prayers.

Thank you, God, for fathers near.

We thank you, O God, for fathers far away
Fathers who ache for their families,
Fathers absent because of war,
Or disease,

Or despair,
Fathers who are in our hearts,
but absent at the same time.

Thank you, God, for fathers far away.

We thank you, O God, for caring communities
Where mothers fill in for fathers,

And fathers fill in for mothers,

And grandparents put on the apron and the towel.

Where aunts and uncles, and those who may be
absolutely no kin at all
,
Make our communities a home
Fit for habitation.
Amen.

SCRIPTURE READINGS TODAY ARE:
GENESIS 1:1–2:4a (The Message)
On this day, Genesis invites us to see in
creation the signs of the blessing and power
of our Triune God who calls each act of
creation "good" and its completion "very good."

1 First this: God created the Heavens and Earth -
all you see, all you don't see.
2 Earth was a soup of nothingness, a bottomless
emptiness, an inky blackness. God's Spirit brooded
like a bird above the watery abyss.
3 God spoke: "Light!" And light appeared.
4 God saw that light was good and separated light
from dark.
5 God named the light Day, he named the dark
Night. It was evening, it was morning - Day One.
6 God spoke: "Sky! In the middle of the waters;
separate water from water!"
7 God made sky. He separated the water under sky
from the water above sky. And there it was:
8 he named sky the Heavens; It was evening,
it was morning - Day Two.
9 God spoke: "Separate! Water-beneath-Heaven,
gather into one place; Land, appear!" And there it was.
10 God named the land Earth. He named the
pooled water Ocean. God saw that it was good.
11 God spoke: "Earth, green up! Grow all varieties of
seed-bearing plants, Every sort of fruit-bearing tree."
And there it was.12 Earth produced green seed-bearing plants, all
varieties, And fruit-bearing trees of all sorts. God saw
that it was good.
13 It was evening, it was morning - Day Three.
14 God spoke: "Lights! Come out! Shine in Heaven's
sky! Separate Day from Night. Mark seasons and days
and years,
15 Lights in Heaven's sky to give light to Earth." And
there it was.16 God made two big lights, the larger to take charge
of Day, The smaller to be in charge of Night; and he
made the stars.
17 God placed them in the heavenly sky to light up
Earth
18 And oversee Day and Night, to separate light and
dark. God saw that it was good.
19 It was evening, it was morning - Day Four.
20 God spoke: "Swarm, Ocean, with fish and all sea life! Birds, fly through the sky over Earth!"
21 God created the huge whales, all the swarm of
life in the waters, And every kind and species of flying birds.
God saw that it was good.
22 God blessed them: "Prosper! Reproduce! Fill
Ocean! Birds, reproduce on Earth!"23 It was evening, it was morning - Day Five.
24 God spoke: "Earth, generate life! Every sort
and kind: cattle and reptiles and wild animals -
all kinds." And there it was:25 wild animals of every kind, Cattle of all kinds, every sort of reptile and bug.God saw that it was good.
26 God spoke: "Let us make human beings in our
image, make them reflecting our nature So they
can be responsible for the fish in the sea, the birds
in the air, the cattle, And, yes, Earth itself, and
every animal that moves on the face of Earth."
27 God created human beings; he created them
godlike, Reflecting God's nature. He created them
male and female.28 God blessed them: "Prosper! Reproduce! Fill
Earth! Take charge! Be responsible for fish in the
sea and birds in the air, for every living thing that
moves on the face of Earth."
29 Then God said, "I've given you every sort of
seed-bearing plant on Earth And every kind of
fruit-bearing tree, given them to you for food.
30 To all animals and all birds, everything that
moves and breathes, I give whatever grows out
of the ground for food." And there it was.
31 God looked over everything he had made; it
was so good, so very good! It was evening, it was
morning - Day Six.
GENESIS 2:1-4
1 Heaven and Earth were finished, down to the
last detail.
2 By the seventh day God had finished his work.
On the seventh day he rested from all his work.
3 God blessed the seventh day. He made it a
Holy Day Because on that day he rested from his
work, all the creating God had done. - Day Seven
4 This is the story of how it all started,
of Heaven and Earth when they were created.

PSALM 8 (UMH 743) (The Message)
A song of wonder and reverence to the creator
who made everything and gave us a place in it.

1 God, brilliant Lord, yours is a household name.
2 Nursing infants gurgle choruses about you; toddlers shout the songs That drown out enemy talk,
and silence atheist babble.
3 I look up at your macro-skies, dark and enormous,
your handmade sky-jewelry, Moon and stars mounted
in their settings.
4 Then I look at my micro-self and wonder, Why do
you bother with us? Why take a second look our way?
5 Yet we've so narrowly missed being gods, bright
with Eden's dawn light.
6 You put us in charge of your handcrafted world,
repeated to us your Genesis-charge,
7 Made us lords of sheep and cattle, even animals
out in the wild,8 Birds flying and fish swimming, whales singing
in the ocean deeps.
9 God, brilliant Lord, your name echoes around the
world.

2 CORINTHIANS 13:11-13 (The Message)
Paul concludes this letter to the Corinthians
by
calling for peace and blessing them with
the
Trinitarian blessing widely known as "the
apostolic blessing."
This is so short, maybe
ou could read it three
times. First at a whisper,
then in a normal tone
of voice, and then as a
shout of praise.

11 And that's about it, friends. Be cheerful. Keep
things in good repair. Keep your spirits up. Think
in harmony. Be agreeable. Do all that, and the God
of love and peace will be with you for sure.
12 Greet one another with a holy embrace.
13 All the brothers and sisters here say hello.

MATTHEW 28:16-20 (The Message)
This is known as the "Great Commission. The Great Commission of our Lord —
as you are going, make disciples.
6 Meanwhile, the eleven disciples were on their
way to Galilee, headed for the mountain Jesus had
set for their reunion.
17 The moment they saw him they worshiped him.
Some, though, held back, not sure about worship,
about risking themselves totally.
18 Jesus, undeterred, went right ahead and gave
his charge: "God authorized and commanded me to
commission you:
19 Go out and train everyone you meet, far and near,
in this way of life, marking them by baptism in the
threefold name: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.
20 Then instruct them in the practice of all I have
commanded you. I'll be with you as you do this, day
after day after day, right up to the end of the age."
