SCRIPTURE READINGS ARE:
ACTS 1:1-11
(The Message)
Acts provides the fullest "orderly account"
of the events surrounding the ascension of
the resurrected Jesus into heaven; the story
of the final teaching and ascension of Jesus.

Theophilus was first mentioned in Luke1:3
and then again in Acts 1:1, as Luke spoke of
the treatise between them to report the things
of Jesus Christ that He did and taught until
His Resurrection. It is apparent that Luke had
respect for this man.

1 Dear Theophilus, in the first volume of this book
I wrote on everything that Jesus began to do and
teach
2 until the day he said good-bye to the apostles,
the ones he had chosen through the Holy Spirit,
and was taken up to heaven.
3 After his death, he presented himself alive to
hem in many different settings over a period of
forty days. In face-to-face meetings, he talked to
them about things concerning the kingdom of God.
4 As they met and ate meals together, he told them
that they were on no account to leave Jerusalem
but "must wait for what the Father promised: the
promise you heard from me.
5 John baptized in water; you will be baptized in the
Holy Spirit. And soon."
6 When they were together for the last time they
asked, "Master, are you going to restore the
kingdom to Israel now? Is this the time?"7 He told them, "You don't get to know the time.
Timing is the Father's business.
8 What you'll get is the Holy Spirit. And when the
Holy Spirit comes on you, you will be able to be my
witnesses in Jerusalem, all over Judea and Samaria,
even to the ends of the world."
9 These were his last words. As they watched, he
was taken up and disappeared in a cloud.10 They stood there, staring into the empty sky.
Suddenly two men appeared - in white robes!11 They said, "You Galileans! - why do you just stand
here looking up at an empty sky? This very Jesus who
was taken up from among you to heaven will come as
certainly - and mysteriously - as he left."

PSALM 47 (UMH 781)
(The Message)
An enthronement psalm for Jesus.
1 Applause, everyone. Bravo, bravissimo! Shout
God-songs at the top of your lungs!
2 God Most High is stunning, astride land and ocean.
3 He crushes hostile people, puts nations at our feet.
4 He set us at the head of the line, prize-winning
Jacob, his favorite.
5 Loud cheers as God climbs the mountain, a ram's
horn blast at the summit.
6 Sing songs to God, sing out! Sing to our King,
sing praise!
7 He's Lord over earth, so sing your best songs to
God.
8 God is Lord of godless nations - sovereign, he's
King of the mountain.
9 Princes from all over are gathered, people of
Abraham's God. The powers of earth are God's -
he soars over all.

EPHESIANS 1:15–23
(The Message)
There are three things the Paul prays for these
congregations to know deeply:
• The hope to which Christ has called them,
• The abundance of Christ's inheritance revealed
in
God's people everywhere, and
• The immeasurable greatness of his power.
Christ rules over all, so we may live with
confidence as his body.
15 That's why, when I heard of the solid trust you
have in the Master Jesus and your outpouring of
love to all the Christians,

16 I couldn't stop thanking God for you - every
time I prayed, I'd think of you and give thanks.
17 But I do more than thank. I ask - ask the God
of our Master, Jesus Christ, the God of glory - to
make you intelligent and discerning in knowing
him personally,
18 your eyes focused and clear, so that you can
see exactly what it is he is calling you to do, grasp
the immensity of this glorious way of life he has
for Christians,
19 oh, the utter extravagance of his work in us who
trust him - endless energy, boundless strength!
20 All this energy issues from Christ: God raised
him from death and set him on a throne in deep
heaven,
21 in charge of running the universe, everything
from galaxies to governments, no name and no
power exempt from his rule. And not just for the
time being, but forever.
22 He is in charge of it all, has the final word on
everything. At the center of all this, Christ rules
the church.
23 The church, you see, is not peripheral to the
world; the world is peripheral to the church. The
church is Christ's body, in which he speaks and
acts, by which he fills everything with his presence.

LUKE 24:44–53
(The Message)
Luke's version of the Ascension story focuses
on the scriptural content of the message to be
proclaimed by disciples in light of his ascension:
The ministry, suffering, death and resurrection
of Jesus as the basis for repentance and
forgiveness of sins. This is an earlier version
of the last words and ascension of Jesus, also
from Luke. It is significant that the two scrolls
that make up Luke-Acts are joined by the
affirmation of his ascension into heaven.

44 Then he said, "Everything I told you while I was
with you comes to this: All the things written about
me in the Law of Moses, in the Prophets, and in
the Psalms have to be fulfilled."
45 He went on to open their understanding of the
Word of God, showing them how to read their
Bibles this way.
46 He said, "You can see now how it is written that
the Messiah suffers, rises from the dead on the
third day,
47 and then a total life-change through the
forgiveness of sins is proclaimed in his name to
all nations - starting from here, from Jerusalem!
48 You're the first to hear and see it. You're the
witnesses.
49 What comes next is very important: I am
sending what my Father promised to you, so stay
here in the city until he arrives, until you're
equipped with power from on high."
50 He then led them out of the city over to Bethany.
Raising his hands he blessed them,
51 and while blessing them, took his leave, being
carried up to heaven.
52 And they were on their knees, worshiping him.
They returned to Jerusalem bursting with joy.
53 They spent all their time in the Temple
praising God. Yes.
