TWELFTH SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST

SCRIPTURE READINGS:
ISAIAH 5:1-8
(The Message)
A "love-song" concerning God's vineyard.
Judah: God "expected justice, but saw
bloodshed; righteousness but heard a cry.
"He planted the very best vines and harvested
Fetid fruit."
1 I'll sing a ballad to the one I love, a love ballad
about his vineyard: The one I love had a vineyard,
a fine, well-placed vineyard.
2 He hoed the soil and pulled the weeds, and planted
the very best vines. He built a lookout, built a winepress, a vineyard to be proud of. He looked for a vintage
yield of grapes, but for all his pains he got junk grapes.
3 "Now listen to what I'm telling you, you who live
in Jerusalem and Judah. What do you think is going
on between me and my vineyard?
4 Can you think of anything I could have done to my
vineyard that I didn't do? When I expected good
grapes, why did I get bitter grapes?
5 "Well now, let me tell you what I'll do to my vineyard:
I'll tear down its fence and let it go to ruin. I'll knock
down the gate and let it be trampled.
6 I'll turn it into a patch of weeds, untended, uncared
for - thistles and thorns will take over. I'll give orders
to the clouds: 'Don't rain on that vineyard, ever!'"
7 Do you get it? The vineyard of
God-of-the-Angel-Armies is the country of Israel. All
the men and women of Judah are the garden he was
so proud of. He looked for a crop of justice and saw
them murdering each other. He looked for a harvest
of righteousness and heard only the moans of victims.
You Who Call Evil Good and Good Evil,
8 Doom to you who buy up all the houses and grab
all the land for yourselves - Evicting the old owners,
posting no trespassing signs, Taking over the country,
leaving everyone homeless and landless.

PSALM 80:1-2, 8-19 (UMH 801)
(The Message)
View the mighty deeds and martyrdom of people
who acted on faith. "Therefore, since we are
surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let
us also . . . run with perseverance the race that
is set before us, looking to Jesus . . ."
PSALM 80:1-19
1 Listen, Shepherd, Israel's Shepherd - get all your
Joseph sheep together. Throw beams of light from
your dazzling throne
2 So Ephraim, Benjamin, and Manasseh can see
where they're going. Get out of bed - you've slept long enough! Come on
the run before it's too late.
3 God, come back! Smile your blessing smile: That
will be our salvation.
4 God, God of the angel armies, how long will you
smolder like a sleeping volcano while your people
call for fire and brimstone?
5 You put us on a diet of tears, bucket after bucket
of salty tears to drink.
6 You make us look ridiculous to our friends; our
enemies poke fun day after day.
7 God of the angel armies, come back! Smile your
blessing smile: That will be our salvation.
8 Remember how you brought a young vine from Egypt,
cleared out the brambles and briers and planted your
very own vineyard?
9 You prepared the good earth, you planted her roots
deep; the vineyard filled the land.
10 Your vine soared high and shaded the mountains,
even dwarfing the giant cedars.
11 Your vine ranged west to the Sea, east to the River.
12 So why do you no longer protect your vine?
Trespassers pick its grapes at will;
13 Wild pigs crash through and crush it, and the mice
nibble away at what's left.14 God of the angel armies, turn our way! Take a
good look at what's happened and attend to this vine.
15 Care for what you once tenderly planted - the
vine you raised from a shoot.
16 And those who dared to set it on fire - give them
a look that will kill!
17 Then take the hand of your once-favorite child, the
child you raised to adulthood.
18 We will never turn our back on you; breathe life into
our lungs so we can shout your name!
19 God, God of the angel armies, come back!Smile your blessing smile: That will be our salvation.

HEBREWS 11:29–12:2
(The Message)
The mighty deeds and martyrdom of people
who acted on faith. "Therefore, since we are
surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses,
let us also . . . run with perseverance the race
that is set before us, looking to Jesus ..."
HEBREWS 11:29
29 By an act of faith, Israel walked through the
Red Sea on dry ground. The Egyptians tried it and drowned. HEBREWS 12:2
2 Keep your eyes on Jesus, who both began and
finished this race we're in. Study how he did it.
Because he never lost sight of where he was
headed - that exhilarating finish in and with God -
he could put up with anything along the way:
cross, shame, whatever. And now he's there, in
the place of honor, right alongside God.

LUKE 12:49-56
(The Message)
Our Lord had been speaking out more plainly
than ever before. Last week He said: "Do not be
afraid, little flock." This week: "I came to bring fire
to the earth . . . I have come . . . to bring division."
49 "I've come to start a fire on this earth - how I wish
it were blazing right now!
50 I've come to change everything, turn everything
rightside up - how I long for it to be finished!51 Do you think I came to smooth things over and
make everything nice? Not so. I've come to disrupt
and confront!
52 From now on, when you find five in a house, it
will be - Three against two, and two against three;
53 Father against son, and son against father;
Mother against daughter, and daughter against
mother; Mother-in-law against bride, and bride
against mother-in-law."
54 Then he turned to the crowd: "When you see
clouds coming in from the west, you'll say,
'Storm's coming' - and you're right.
55 And when the wind comes out of the south, you'll
say, 'This'll be a hot one' - and you're right.
56 Frauds! You know how to tell a change in the
weather, so don't tell me you can't tell a change in
the season, the God-season we're in right now.

Just a reminder that literature for Ingathering supplies
can be found on the display tables in both churches.
We will keep you updated concerning what is needed.
Ingathering is at Greenfield United Methodist Church
again this year. The first Saturday in November.
I know, it sounds like a long time away - but it will be
here before you can say "Ingathering Kit".

A picture of when I first held Rhys, my first grandson.Wow!!! Rhys is a wonderful baby! Mom and Dad
are doing well. I get to spend a few days with all
three of them in Eden Prairie. It does not get any
better than this.
Rhys got out of the hospital at the end of last week
and the routine at home is beginning to organize
itself. There are new discoveries every day.
I have pictures if you would like to see them when I
get back.
Yes, Grandma would love to show them to you.
God Bless and Keep You,
Pastor Lynn
