SUNDAY, AUGUST 22ND
THIRTEENTH SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST
COLOR: GREEN

SCRIPTURE READINGS:
JEREMIAH 1:4-10
(The Message)
Jeremiah recounted the experience of his calling
by God to be a prophet of warning and hope
amidst a people headed toward exile in Babylon
(In modern day Iraq).
Jeremiah reports that God appointed him before
birth: "Before I formed you
in the womb I knew
you . . . you shall go to all to
whom I send you . .
to pluck up and to pull down,
to destroy and to
overthrow, to build and plant."
Jeremiah would
be a prophet "to the nations," in
part, because in
his day his own nation would be
part of the
uprooting of many nations during the
reign of
Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon.
4 This is what God said:
5 "Before I shaped you in the womb, I knew all about
you. Before you saw the light of day, I had holy plans
for you: A prophet to the nations - that's what I had in
mind for you."
6 But I said, "Hold it, Master God! Look at me. I don't
know anything. I'm only a boy!"
7 God told me, "Don't say, 'I'm only a boy.' I'll tell you
where to go and you'll go there. I'll tell you what to
say and you'll say it.
8 Don't be afraid of a soul. I'll be right there, looking
after you." God's Decree.
9 God reached out, touched my mouth, and said,
"Look! I've just put my words in your mouth -
hand-delivered!
10 See what I've done? I've given you a job to do
among nations and governments - a red-letter day!
Your job is to pull up and tear down, take apart and
demolish, And then start over, building and planting."
Stand Up and Say Your Piece.

PSALM 71:1-6 (UMH 794)
(The Message)
This psalm picks up on the fortress and youth
motifs of the reading from Jeremiah.

1 I run for dear life to God, I'll never live to regret it.
2 Do what you do so well: get me out of this mess
and up on my feet. Put your ear to the ground and
listen, give me space for salvation.
3 Be a guest room where I can retreat; you said
your door was always open! You're my salvation -
my vast, granite fortress.
4 My God, free me from the grip of Wicked, from
the clutch of Bad and Bully.
5 You keep me going when times are tough - my
bedrock, God, since my childhood.
6 I've hung on you from the day of my birth, the
day you took me from the cradle; I'll never run out
of praise.

HEBREWS 12:18-29
(The Message)
In the unshakable new kingdom we have
received, it's not "hands off" and "back away"
but come and join the fellowship of angels,
martyrs, prophets, God the judge of all and
Jesus Christ.

18 Unlike your ancestors, you didn't come to Mount
Sinai - all that volcanic blaze and earthshaking
rumble -
19 to hear God speak. The earsplitting words and
soul-shaking message terrified them and they begged
him to stop.
20 When they heard the words - "If an animal touches
the Mountain, it's as good as dead" - they were afraid
to move.
21 Even Moses was terrified.
22 No, that's not your experience at all. You've come
to Mount Zion, the city where the living God resides.
The invisible Jerusalem is populated by throngs of
festive angels
23 and Christian citizens. It is the city where God is
Judge, with judgments that make us just.
24 You've come to Jesus, who presents us with a
new covenant, a fresh charter from God. He is the
Mediator of this covenant. The murder of Jesus, not
like Abel's - a homicide that cried out for vengeance -
became a proclamation of grace.
25 So don't turn a deaf ear to these gracious words.
If those who ignored earthly warnings didn't get away
with it, what will happen to us if we turn our backs on
heavenly warnings?
26 His voice that time shook the earth clear to its
foundations; this time - he's told us this quite plainly
- he'll also rock the heavens: "One last shaking, from
top to bottom, stem to stern."
27 The phrase "one last shaking" means a thorough
housecleaning, getting rid of all the historical and
religious junk so that the unshakable essentials stand
clear and uncluttered.
28 Do you see what we've got? An unshakable
kingdom! And do you see how thankful we must be?
Not only thankful, but brimming with worship, deeply
reverent before God.
For God is not an indifferent bystander.
29 He's actively cleaning house, torching all that
needs to burn, and he won't quit until it's all cleansed.
God himself is Fire!

LUKE 13:10-17
(The Message)
Jesus heals a woman on the sabbath who had
been crippled for eighteen years and confronts

an outraged leader of the synagogue.

10 He was teaching in one of the meeting places
on the Sabbath.
11 There was a woman present, so twisted and bent
over with arthritis that she couldn't even look up. She
had been afflicted with this for eighteen years.
12 When Jesus saw her, he called her over. "Woman,
you're free!"
13 He laid hands on her and suddenly she was
standing straight and tall, giving glory to God.
14 The meeting-place president, furious because
Jesus had healed on the Sabbath, said to the
congregation, Six days have been defined as work
days. Come on one of the six if you want to be
healed, but not on the seventh, the Sabbath."
15 But Jesus shot back, "You frauds! Each Sabbath
every one of you regularly unties your cow or donkey
from its stall, leads it out for water, and thinks nothing
of it.
16 So why isn't it all right for me to untie this daughter
of Abraham and lead her from the stall where Satan
has had her tied these eighteen years?"
17 When he put it that way, his critics were left looking
quite silly and red-faced. The congregation was
delighted and cheered him on.

"URBAN PLUNGE" PROGRAM
Our vision is to help people from small towns or
farms go into the inner-city areas of larger
metropolitan areas.
We take participants out of their
comfort zone, and let them experience what is
happening in the inner-city areas across the nation.
Our goal is to
meet the needs of the poor, homeless,
and destitute in these localities.

Several Iowa UMC churches have taken the
Urban Plunge in Des Moines, Omaha, Kansas City
and Sioux Falls. To date, over 2,500 people from
over 200 churches have participated in a Plunge.
They spend a weekend in the inner-city visiting
different faith-based organizations that work among
the poor. They may hang out with homeless guys
on the streets late at night, feed the homeless,
go to a jail, or hand out clothing.

FACEBOOK FANS RANKED FAVORITE HYMNS.
More than 1,500 people recently responded to this
survey on The United Methodist Church’s official
Facebook page.
The favorite hymns were tabulated for more than
200 hymns that users nominated as their favorites.
"The results are not scientific," says the Rev. Larry
Hollon, chief executive of United Methodist
Communications.
They ranked “Here I Am, Lord” first, followed by
“How Great Thou Art,” and then “Amazing Grace.”
He was surprised that “Amazing Grace” was No. 3
in the Facebook survey. Most surveys, rate it “far
above any other hymn or Christian song, of United

Our prayers go out to the thousands of people who
were adversely impacted by a multitude of torrential
rains this summer. The damage is almost incredible.
People must wait until the water recedes, and then
deal with the aftermath. "Can we repair the damage
or must we start over?" Extremely stressful times.
• • • School will be starting and vacations will be
winding down within the next couple weeks.
Watch for increased numbers of little people
hurrying
about - trying to do what the big people tell them to
do.

God Bless and Keep You,
Pastor Lynn
