1 KINGS 17:8-24
(The Message)
Elijah is directed to live in Sidon and to be fed by
a widow in Zarephath. When her son dies,
Elijah prays for him to be restored.
8 Then God spoke to him:
9 "Get up and go to Zarephath in Sidon and live there.
I've instructed a woman who lives there, a widow, to
feed you."
10 So he got up and went to Zarephath. As he came to
the entrance of the village he met a woman, a widow,
gathering firewood. He asked her, "Please, would you
bring me a little water in a jug? I need a drink."
11 As she went to get it, he called out, "And while
you're at it, would you bring me something to eat?"
12 She said, "I swear, as surely as your God lives, I
don't have so much as a biscuit. I have a handful of
flour in a jar and a little oil in a bottle; you found me
scratching together just enough firewood to make a
last meal for my son and me. After we eat it, we'll die."13 Elijah said to her, "Don't worry about a thing. Go
ahead and do what you've said. But first make a small
biscuit for me and bring it back here. Then go ahead
and make a meal from what's left for you and your son.
14 This is the word of the God of Israel: 'The jar of flour
will not run out and the bottle of oil will not become
empty before God sends rain on the land and ends this
drought.'"
15 And she went right off and did it, did just as Elijah
asked. And it turned out as he said - daily food for her
and her family.16 The jar of meal didn't run out and the bottle of oil
didn't become empty: God's promise fulfilled to the
letter, exactly as Elijah had delivered it!
17 Later on the woman's son became sick. The
sickness took a turn for the worse - and then he stopped
breathing.
18 The woman said to Elijah, "Why did you ever show
up here in the first place - a holy man barging in,
exposing my sins, and killing my son?"
19 Elijah said, "Hand me your son."
20 Then he prayed, "O God, my God, why have you
brought this terrible thing on this widow who has
opened her home to me? Why have you killed her son?"
21 Three times he stretched himself out full-length on
the boy, praying with all his might, "God, my God,
put breath back into this boy's body!"
22 God listened to Elijah's prayer and put breath
back into his body - he was alive!
23 Elijah picked the boy up, carried him downstairs
from the loft, and gave him to his mother. "Here's
your son," said Elijah, "alive!"24 The woman said to Elijah, "I see it all now - you
are a holy man. When you speak,
God speaks - a true word!"

PSALM 146 (UMH 858) (The Message)
"The Lord watches over the sojourners,
and upholds the widow and the orphan."
1 Hallelujah! O my soul, praise God!
2 All my life long I'll praise God, singing songs to my
God as long as I live.
3 Don't put your life in the hands of experts who know
nothing of life, of salvation life.
4 Mere humans don't have what it takes; when they
die, their projects die with them.
5 Instead, get help from the God of Jacob, put your
hope in God and know real blessing!
6 God made sky and soil, sea and all the fish in it.He always does what he says -
7 he defends the wronged, he feeds the hungry.
God frees prisoners -
8 he gives sight to the blind, he lifts up the fallen.
9 protects strangers, takes the side of orphans and
widows, but makes short work of the wicked.
10 God's in charge - always.
Zion's God is God for good! Hallelujah!

GALATIANS 1:11-24
(The Message)
Paul reminds the Christians in Galatia that the
gospel he shared with them was truly from Jesus,
and not based on the opinions of mortals.
11 Know this - I am most emphatic here, friends -
this great Message I delivered to you is not mere
human optimism.
12 I didn't receive it through the traditions, and I
wasn't taught it in some school. I got it straight from
God, received the Message directly from Jesus Christ.
13 I'm sure that you've heard the story of my earlier
life when I lived in the Jewish way. In those days I
went all out in persecuting God's church. I was
systematically destroying it.
14 I was so enthusiastic about the traditions of my
ancestors that I advanced head and shoulders above
my peers in my career.
15 Even then God had designs on me. Why, when I
was still in my mother's womb he chose and called me
out of sheer generosity!
16 Now he has intervened and revealed his Son to
me so that I might joyfully tell non-Jews about him.
17 and without going up to Jerusalem to confer with
those who were apostles long before I was - I got away
to Arabia. Later I returned to Damascus,
18 but it was three years before I went up to Jerusalem
to compare stories with Peter. I was there only fifteen
days - but what days they were!
19 Except for our Master's brother James, I saw no
other apostles.
20 (I'm telling you the absolute truth in this.)
21 Then I began my ministry in the regions of Syria
and Cilicia. 22 After all that time and activity I was still unknown
by face among the Christian churches in Judea.
23 There was only this report: "That man who once
persecuted us is now preaching the very message he
used to try to destroy."
24 Their response was to recognize and worship God
because of me!

LUKE 7:11-17 (The Message)
Jesus raises the dead son of a widow of Nain.
Luke invites us to consider how compassionate we
are with those who have lost much. Consider the
extensive pain in Iraq, the Middle East, Afghanistan,
Sudan, Haiti, Chile, and our own Gulf of Mexico.
Consider people who have lost their jobs, lost loved
ones, lost a way of life, lost everything. Where do we
find the strength to begin again? We seek God's
power of restoration through the community of faith.
11 Not long after that, Jesus went to the village Nain.
His disciples were with him, along with quite a large
crowd.
12 As they approached the village gate, they met a
funeral procession - a woman's only son was being
carried out for burial. And the mother was a widow.
13 When Jesus saw her, his heart broke. He said to
her, "Don't cry."
14 Then he went over and touched the coffin. The
pallbearers stopped. He said, "Young man,
I tell you: Get up."
15 The dead son sat up and began talking. Jesus
presented him to his mother.16 They all realized they were in a place of holy
mystery, that God was at work among them. They
were quietly worshipful - and then noisily grateful,
calling out among themselves, "God is back, looking
to the needs of his people!"
17 The news of Jesus spread all through the country.

keep some candles and a flashlight handy, and
stay inside.
