Sunday, June 1st — 3rd Sunday after Pentecost. The color is green. Green is the color of plant life, abundant in spring. It is used to represent the triumph of life over death. Green is the liturgical color for Sundays after Pentecost.

Tuesday, June 3rd — Adair U.M.C. Disciple Study will meet 9:00 A.M. to 11:00 A.M.
Pastor Lynn will have Office Hours on Tuesdays in the Adair U.M.C. Her door will be open from 11:00 A.M. until 12:00 A.M. and then after lunch the door will be open from 1:00 P.M. until 4:00 P.M. We will meet in the Fellowship Hall at 3:00 P.M. for Prayer Shawl Ministry.

Thursday, June 5th — Quilting Group will meet at Casey U.M.C. this afternoon.

Thursday, June 5th — Registration begins for United Methodist 2008 Annual Conference
Annual Conference will meet in Ames at Hilton Coliseum the 5th, 6th, 7th and 8th of June.

The area of Parkersburg and New Hartford, Iowa suffered a catastrophic tornado last Sunday. Bishop Gregory Palmer issued a statement concerning that event which is included here.

Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ,

As you have surely heard, a tornado devastated Parkersburg, New Hartford and surrounding areas on Sunday afternoon. May 25. Some lost their lives, others are injured and the devastation is overwhelming.

The Parkersburg parsonage was destroyed. Rev. Betsy Piette and her daughter had taken shelter in the basement when the warning sounded. They were able to walk out after the tornado passed. They have lost everything.

Rev. Piette reports that the Parkersburg church still stands. Only one stained glass window in the sanctuary was blown out, though all the windows in the building’s wings are gone. There are some holes in the church roof and there is water damage. “The amazing thing,” she said, “is that the crosses still stand on the church; when people come into town that’s what they see!”

Destruction in Parkersburg, a community of nearly 2000 residents, is widespread. Some 400 homes were damaged with 200 being destroyed. City hall, the high school and twenty-one businesses are destroyed. The Kwik Star gas station and the local grocery store are also heavily damaged. Parkersburg is without water, electricity or sewer service (as of Monday mid-day).

The New Hartford church and parsonage sustained minor damage – the church is missing some shingles on the roof and a gutter on the parsonage was broken when a falling tree glanced off the house. Clean-up is the major need; mud that was whipped up by the tornado coats everything.

Please keep Rev. Betsy Piette and her family, the people of the Parkersburg United Methodist Church and the traumatized residents of that small community in your prayers. Likewise, remember persons in New Hartford and the surrounding area.

There will be opportunities for hands-on volunteer work and financial assistance. When plans are developed you’ll be notified directly.

A fund has been established to support the relief efforts in Northeast Iowa following the tornado on Sunday, May 25, 2008. Checks, made payable to the Iowa Annual Conference, with Tornado Relief, #247 entered on the memo line, may be sent directly to: Tornado Relief Fund, Iowa Conference Center, 2301 Rittenhouse Street, Des Moines, IA 50321.
