GENESIS 32:22-31
THE MESSAGE (MSG)
Jacob’s family and future are on the line.
This is Jacob’s first encounter with Esau
since Jacob (“Grabber’) had taken both
birthright and blessing from his brother.
Since his encounter with God at Beth-el,
we have no record that Jacob had heard
anything else from God in the 14 years he
had worked on his uncle’s sheep farm.
Jacob wrestles with a "man" at the
Jabbok and is renamed Israel because he
has "striven with God and with humans,
and has prevailed."

22-23 But during the night he got up and
took his two wives, his two maidservants,
and his eleven children and crossed the
ford of the Jabbok. He got them safely
across the brook along with all his
possessions.

24-25 But Jacob stayed behind by himself,
and a man wrestled with him until
daybreak. When the man saw that he
couldn't get the best of Jacob as they
wrestled, he deliberately threw Jacob's
hip out of joint. 
26 The man said, "Let me go; it's day-
break."

   Jacob said, "I'm not letting you go 'til
you bless me."

27 The man said, "What's your name?"

   He answered, "Jacob."

28 The man said, "But no longer. Your
name is no longer Jacob. From now on it's
Israel (God-Wrestler); you've wrestled with
God and you've come through."

29 Jacob asked, "And what's your name?"

   The man said, "Why do you want to
know my name?" And then, right then and
there, he blessed him.

30 Jacob named the place Peniel (God's
Face) because, he said, "I saw God face-
to-face and lived to tell the story!"

31-32 The sun came up as he left Peniel,
limping because of his hip. (This is why
Israelites to this day don't eat the hip
muscle; because Jacob's hip was thrown
out of joint.)

A PSALM OF DAVID

1-2 Listen while I build my case, God, the
most honest prayer you'll ever hear.
   Show the world I'm innocent—
      in your heart you know I am.

—You'll find I'm just what I say I am.

ROMANS 9:1-5
THE MESSAGE (MSG)
Paul, the apostle to the Gentiles, declares
his great concern and anguish for his own
people.
GOD IS CALLING HIS PEOPLE
1-5
At the same time, you need to know
that I carry with me at all times a huge
sorrow. It's an enormous pain deep within
me, and I'm never free of it. I'm not
exaggerating—Christ and the Holy Spirit
are my witnesses. It's the Israelites...If
there were any way I could be cursed by
the Messiah so they could be blessed by
him, I'd do it in a minute. They're my
family. I grew up with them. They had
everything going for them—family, glory,
covenants, revelation, worship, promises,
to say nothing of being the race that
produced the Messiah, the Christ, who is
God over everything, always. Oh, yes!

MATTHEW 14:13-21
THE MESSAGE (MSG)
Upon hearing of the death of John the
Baptist, Jesus and the disciples withdraw
to a quiet place, but the crowd follows,
and more than 5000 people are fed.
SUPPER FOR FIVE THOUSAND

13-14 When Jesus got the news, he
slipped away by boat to an out-of-the-way
place by himself. But unsuccessfully—
someone saw him and the word got
around. Soon a lot of people from the
nearby villages walked around the lake to
where he was. When he saw them coming,
he was overcome with pity and healed
their sick.

15 Toward evening the disciples
approached him. "We're out in the country
and it's getting late. Dismiss the people so
they can go to the villages and get some
supper."

16 But Jesus said, "There is no need to
dismiss them. You give them supper."

17 "All we have are five loaves of bread
and two fish," they said.

18-21 Jesus said, "Bring them here." Then
he had the people sit on the grass. He took
the five loaves and two fish, lifted his face
to heaven in prayer, blessed, broke, and
gave the bread to the disciples.   
The disciples then gave the food to the
congregation. They all ate their fill. They
gathered twelve baskets of leftovers.
About five thousand were fed.

• 1735 - Freedom of the press was
established with an acquittal of John Peter
Zenger. The writer of the New York Weekly
Journal had been charged with seditious
libel by the royal governor of New York.
The jury said "the truth is not libelous."
• 1922 - The death of Alexander Graham
Bell, two days earlier, was recognized by
AT&T and the Bell Systems by shutting
down all switchboards and switching
stations. The shutdown affected
13 million phones. 
• 1944 - Nazi police raided a house in
Amsterdam and arrested eight people.
Anne Frank, a teenager at the time, was
one of the people arrested. Her diary
would be published after her death.
• 1954 - The uranium rush began in
Saskatchewan, Canada.
• 1972 - Arthur Bremer was found guilty of
shooting George Wallace, the governor of
Alabama. Bremer was sentenced to 63
years in prison.
• 1987 - The Fairness Doctrine is rescinded
by the Federal Communications
Commission. The doctrine had required
radio and TV stations to present
controversial issues in a balanced fashion.
• 1991 - The Oceanos, a Greek luxury liner,
sank off of South Africa's southeast coast.
All 402 passengers and 179 crew members
survived.

• 1884 - On Bedloe's Island in New York
Harbor, the cornerstone for the Statue of
Liberty was laid.
• 1944 - Polish insurgents liberated a
German labor camp in Warsaw. 348 Jewish
prisoners were freed.
• 2011 - Juno was launched from Cape
Canaveral Air Force Station on a mission
to Jupiter. It was the first solar-powered
spacecraft to go to Jupiter.

• 1945 - The United Nations Charter was
signed by U.S. President Truman.
• 1966 - Dr. Michael DeBakey became the
first surgeon to install an artificial heart
pump in a patient.
• 2000 - The submarine H.L. Hunley was
raised from ocean floor after 136 years.
The sub had been lost during an attack on
the U.S.S. Housatonic in 1864. The Hunley
was the first submarine in history to sink
a warship.

• 1936 - Jesse Owens won his fourth gold
medal at the Berlin Olympics. He was the
first American to win four medals in one
Olympics.
• 1975 - The New Orleans Superdome as
officially opened when the Saints played
the Houston Oilers in exhibition football.
Later the Superdome was an extremely
valuable asset during Hurricane Katrina.

Many people found shelter there for days.
