OUR WEEK —
MAY 26TH TO JUNE 1ST —

REMINDERS —
—————————————————————
The midwest has experienced some very tragic
tornadoes this past week.   Loss of lives . . . . . .
loss of homes . . . . loss of infrastructure.  Pray
for those who have lost everything.  Be grateful
for thousands of workers who have volunteered
to restore and reconstruct lives from absolutely
incredible circumstances. It will be a long time
before these people can live a normal life again.

PROVERBS 8:1-4, 22-31
THE MESSAGE (MSG)
Wisdom speaks and understanding raises her
voice to remind all of her presence with God in
and through all creation.
Today, the readings are related and themed
around the celebration of the triune nature
of God.

 LADY WISDOM CALLS OUT
1-11  Do you hear Lady Wisdom calling? Can
you hear Madame Insight raising her voice?
She's taken her stand at First and Main,
   at the busiest intersection.
Right in the city square
where the traffic is thickest, she shouts,
"You—I'm talking to all of you,
everyone out here on the streets!
Listen, you idiots—learn good sense!
   You blockheads—shape up!
Don't miss a word of this—I'm telling you how
   to live well,
I'm telling you how to live at your best.
My mouth chews and savors and relishes truth—
I can't stand the taste of evil!
You'll only hear true and right words from my
   mouth;
not one syllable will be twisted or skewed.
You'll recognize this as true—you with open
   minds;
truth-ready minds will see it at once.
Prefer my life-disciplines over chasing after
   money,
and God-knowledge over a lucrative career.
For Wisdom is better than all the trappings of
   wealth;
nothing you could wish for holds a candle to
   her.

22-31 "God sovereignly made me—the first, the
   basic—
   before he did anything else.
I was brought into being a long time ago,
well before Earth got its start.
I arrived on the scene before Ocean,
yes, even before Springs and Rivers and Lakes.
Before Mountains were sculpted and Hills took
   shape,
   I was already there, newborn;
Long before God stretched out Earth's Horizons,
and tended to the minute details of Soil and
   Weather,
And set Sky firmly in place,
   I was there.
When he mapped and gave borders to wild
   Ocean,
built the vast vault of Heaven,
and installed the fountains that fed Ocean,
When he drew a boundary for Sea,
posted a sign that said no trespassing,
And then staked out Earth's Foundations,
I was right there with him, making sure every-
   thing fit.
Day after day I was there, with my joyful
   applause,
   always enjoying his company,
Delighted with the world of things and creatures,
   happily celebrating the human family.

PSALM 8 (UMH 743)
THE MESSAGE (MSG)
A PSALM OF DAVID

1 God, brilliant Lord, yours is a household name.

2 Nursing infants gurgle choruses about you;
       toddlers shout the songs
   That drown out enemy talk,
      and silence atheist babble.
3-4 I look up at your macro-skies, dark and
   enormous,
      your handmade sky-jewelry,
Moon and stars mounted in their settings.
Then I look at my micro-self and wonder,
Why do you bother with us?
Why take a second look our way?

5-8 Yet we've so narrowly missed being gods,
      bright with Eden's dawn light.
You put us in charge of your handcrafted
   world,
      repeated to us your Genesis-charge,
Made us lords of sheep and cattle,
even animals out in the wild,
   Birds flying and fish swimming,
whales singing in the ocean deeps.

9 God, brilliant Lord,
your name echoes around the world.

ROMANS 5:1-5
THE MESSAGE (MSG)
The character of our life in our Triune God: We
are reconciled to God through Jesus and we
boast in the sufferings of this age because they
lead us to hope in God's love poured out upon
us by the Holy Spirit.
DEVELOPING PATIENCE

1-2 By entering through faith into what God has
always wanted to do for us—set us right with
him, make us fit for him—we have it all together
with God because of our Master Jesus. And
that's not all: We throw open our doors to God
and discover at the same moment that he has
already thrown open his door to us. We find
ourselves standing where we always hoped we
might stand—out in the wide open spaces of
God's grace and glory, standing tall and
shouting our praise.

3-5 There's more to come: We continue to shout
our praise even when we're hemmed in with
troubles, because we know how troubles can
develop passionate patience in us, and how that
patience in turn forges the tempered steel of
virtue, keeping us alert for whatever God will do
next. In alert expectancy such as this, we're
never left feeling shortchanged. Quite the
contrary—we can't round up enough containers
to hold everything God generously pours into
our lives through the Holy Spirit!

JOHN 16:12-15
THE MESSAGE (MSG)
Jesus speaks of the work of the Holy Spirit,
declaring to the disciples all the truth that is his
from the Father.
12-15
"I still have many things to tell you, but
you can't handle them now. But when the Friend
comes, the Spirit of the Truth, he will take you by
the hand and guide you into all the truth there is.
He won't draw attention to himself, but will make
sense out of what is about to happen and, indeed,
out of all that I have done and said. He will honor
me; he will take from me and deliver it to you.
Everything the Father has is also mine. That is
why I've said, 'He takes from me and delivers to
you.'
