SCRIPTURE READINGS:
ACTS 2:1-21
(The Message)
"Pentecost" is from the Greek word meaning
"fiftieth," because it was (and still is) celebrated
beginning fifty days after the Sabbath following
Passover, which is also the day of the giving of
the Torah. Fifty days after the original Passover
caused Pharoah to let the Hebrew people leave
Egypt.
Pentecost, like Passover, was a major pilgrimage
feast. Jewish pilgrims from the whole of the
diaspora would flood into Jerusalem for the
celebration of Torah and the wheat harvest. The
usual smells around the city would have been
overwhelmed by the smell of the baking of bread
from all this wheat. This Pentecost was fifty days after the
resurrection of Jesus. On this day, the Spirit
came with power on his disciples as Jesus
himself had told them to expect.
Peter's message alludes, it is nothing less than
the inauguration of an entirely new era. The Holy
Spirit arrives with power, and thousands of
pilgrims from nations far and near hear the good
news of salvation in Jesus Christ in their own
languages.
1 When the Feast of Pentecost came, they were
all together in one place.
2 Without warning there was a sound like a strong
wind, gale force -no one could tell where it came from. It filled the
whole building.
3 Then, like a wildfire, the Holy Spirit spread through their ranks,
4 and they started speaking in a number of
different languages as the Spirit prompted them.
5 There were many Jews staying in Jerusalem
just then, devout pilgrims from all over the world.
6 When they heard the sound, they came on the
run. Then when they heard, one after another,
their own mother tongues being spoken, they
were thunderstruck.7 They couldn't for the life of them figure out what
was going on, and kept saying, "Aren't these all
Galileans?
8 How come we're hearing them talk in our various
mother tongues?
9 Parthians, Medes, and Elamites; Visitors from
Mesopotamia, Judea, and Cappadocia,
10 Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of
Libya belonging to Cyrene;
11 both Jews and proselytes; Even Cretans and
Arabs! "They're speaking our languages, describing
God's mighty works!"
12 Their heads were spinning; they couldn't make
head or tail of any of it. They talked back and forth,
confused: "What's going on here?"
13 Others joked, "They're drunk on cheap wine."
14 That's when Peter stood up and, backed by the
other eleven, spoke out with bold urgency:
"Fellow Jews, all of you who are visiting Jerusalem,
listen carefully and get this story straight.
15 These people aren't drunk as some of you
suspect. They haven't had time to get drunk -
it's only nine o'clock in the morning.
16 This is what the prophet Joel announced would
happen:
17 "In the Last Days," God says, "I will pour out
my Spirit on every kind of people: Your sons will
prophesy, also your daughters; Your young men
will see visions, your old men dream dreams.
18 When the time comes, I'll pour out my Spirit
On those who serve me, men and women both,
and they will prophesy.
19 I'll set wonders in the sky above and signs on
the earth below, Blood and fire and billowing smoke,
20 the sun turning black and the moon blood-red,Before the Day of the Lord arrives, the Day
tremendous and marvelous;
21 And whoever calls out for help to me, God,
will be saved."

PSALM 104:24–34, 35b (UMH 826)
(The Message)
24 What a wildly wonderful world, God! You made it
all, with Wisdom at your side, made earth overflow
with your wonderful creations. 25 Oh, look - the deep, wide sea, brimming with fish
past counting, sardines and sharks and salmon.
26 Ships plow those waters, and Leviathan, your pet dragon, romps in them.27 All the creatures look expectantly to you to give
them their meals on time.
28 You come, and they gather around; you open
your hand and they eat from it.
29 If you turned your back, they'd die in a minute -
Take back your Spirit and they die,
revert to original mud;
30 Send out your Spirit and they spring to life -
the whole countryside in bloom and blossom.
31 The glory of God - let it last forever! Let God
enjoy his creation!
32 He takes one look at earth and triggers an
earthquake, points a finger at the mountains,
and volcanoes erupt.
33 Oh, let me sing to God all my life long, sing
hymns to my God as long as I live!
34 Oh, let my song please him; I'm so pleased
to be singing to God.
35 But clear the ground of sinners - no more
godless men and women! O my soul, bless God!

1 CORINTHIANS 12:3b-13
(The Message)
The Holy Spirit gives many gifts for many
ministries in the one body of Jesus Christ.
Paul's list of gifts here is expansive, but by no
means exhaustive. Every disciple of Jesus Christ
who is walking in the power of the Spirit has
been given many gifts not just for use within the
Christian community—but to bless people
wherever we go.
3 For instance, by using your heads, you know
perfectly well that the Spirit of God would never
prompt anyone to say "Jesus be damned!" Nor
would anyone be inclined to say "Jesus is Master!"
without the insight of the Holy Spirit.
4 God's various gifts are handed out everywhere;
but they all originate in God's Spirit.
5 God's various ministries are carried out everywhere;
but they all originate in God's Spirit.
6 God's various expressions of power are in action
everywhere; but God himself is behind it all.
7 Each person is given something to do that shows
who God is: Everyone gets in on it, everyone benefits.
All kinds of things are handed out by the Spirit, and to
all kinds of people!8 The variety is wonderful: wise counsel, clear
understanding,
9 simple trust, healing the sick,10 miraculous acts, proclamation, distinguishing
between spirits tongues, interpretation of tongues.
11 All these gifts have a common origin, but are
handed out one by one by the one Spirit of God.
He decides who gets what, and when.12 You can easily enough see how this kind of thing
works by looking no further than your own body.
Your body has many parts - limbs, organs, cells -
but no matter how many parts you can name, you're
still one body. It's exactly the same with Christ.
13 By means of his one Spirit, we all said good-bye
to our partial and piecemeal lives. We each used to
independently call our own shots, but then we
entered into a large and integrated life in which he
has the final say in everything. (This is what we
proclaimed in word and action when we were
baptized.) Each of us is now a part of his
resurrection body, refreshed and sustained at one
fountain - his Spirit - where we all come to drink.
The old labels we once used to identify ourselves -
labels like Jew or Greek, slave or free - are no
longer useful. We need something larger, more
comprehensive.

JOHN 7:37-39
(The Message)
John 7 records the words of Jesus at another
Jewish pilgrimage festival, Sukkoth (soo-KOTE),
the Feast of Tabernacles/Booths. Beginning five
days after Yom Kippur, this week-long celebration
remembers the wilderness wandering of Israel
when the people lived in tents, and ends with a
great time of rejoicing in a day called "Simchas
Torah" (rejoicing in the Torah). It was a fall
harvest festival (barley), in which there would
have been a great "ingathering" of the grain and
blessings for the new planting season to come.
Jesus intends us and the Spirit that empowers
us to become life-giving agents for the most
abundant harvest of blessing ever seen.
37 On the final and climactic day of the Feast,
Jesus took his stand. He cried out, "If anyone
thirsts, let him come to me and drink.
38 Rivers of living water will brim and spill out of
the depths of anyone who believes in me this way,
just as the Scripture says."
39 (He said this in regard to the Spirit, whom
those who believed in him were about to receive.
The Spirit had not yet been given because Jesus
had not yet been glorified.)
