CHRIST THE KING SUNDAY
COLOR: WHITE OR GOLD
SCRIPTURE READINGS:
JEREMIAH 23:1-6
(The Message)
The Lord rejects the bad shepherds (kings) of
Israel/Judah who scatter the flock and promises
to raise up good kings and a branch in the line of
David to rule in righteousness.
Jeremiah prophesies that God will intervene to
provide new leadership, new shepherds (rulers)
who will be true shepherds of the people -- caring
for their needs, establishing justice for all, and
promoting righteousness beginning in the
government itself.
1 "Doom to the shepherd-leaders who butcher and
scatter my sheep!" God's Decree.
2 "So here is what I, God, Israel's God, say to the
shepherd-leaders who misled my people: 'You've
scattered my sheep. You've driven them off. You
haven't kept your eye on them. Well, let me tell you,
I'm keeping my eye on you, keeping track of your
criminal behavior.3 I'll take over and gather what's left of my sheep,
gather them in from all the lands where I've driven
them. I'll bring them back where they belong, and
they'll recover and flourish.
4 I'll set shepherd-leaders over them who will take
good care of them. They won't live in fear or panic
anymore.
All the lost sheep rounded up!' God's Decree."
5 "Time's coming" - God's Decree - "when I'll establish
a truly righteous David-Branch, A ruler who knows
how to rule justly. He'll make sure of justice and keep
people united.
6 In his time Judah will be secure again and Israel will
live in safety. This is the name they'll give him:
'God-Who-Puts-Everything-Right.'

LUKE 1:68-79 (UMH 208)
(The Message)
The Song of Zechariah.
68 Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel; he came and
set his people free.
69 He set the power of salvation in the center of our lives,
and in the very house of David his servant,
70 Just as he promised long ago through the preaching
of his holy prophets:
71 Deliverance from our enemies and every hateful
hand;
72 Mercy to our fathers, as he remembers to do what
he said he'd do,
73 What he swore to our father Abraham -
74 a clean rescue from the enemy camp, So we can
worship him without a care in the world,
75 made holy before him as long as we live.
76 And you, my child, "Prophet of the Highest," will
go ahead of the Master to prepare his ways,
77 Present the offer of salvation to his people, the
forgiveness of their sins.
78 Through the heartfelt mercies of our God, God's
Sunrise will break in upon us,
79 Shining on those in the darkness, those sitting in
the shadow of death, Then showing us the way, one
foot at a time, down the path of peace.

COLOSSIANS 1:11-20
(The Message)
A hymn of praise to Christ the King of All.
11 We pray that you'll have the strength to stick it out
over the long haul - not the grim strength of gritting
your teeth but the glory-strength God gives. It is
strength that endures the unendurable and spills
over into joy,
12 thanking the Father who makes us strong enough
to take part in everything bright and beautiful that he
has for us.
13 God rescued us from dead-end alleys and dark
dungeons. He's set us up in the kingdom of the Son
he loves so much,
14 the Son who got us out of the pit we were in, got
rid of the sins we were doomed to keep repeating.
15 We look at this Son and see the God who cannot
be seen. We look at this Son and see God's original
purpose in everything created.
16 For everything, absolutely everything, above and
below, visible and invisible, rank after rank after rank
of angels - everything got started in him and finds its
purpose in him.
17 He was there before any of it came into existence
and holds it all together right up to this moment.
18 And when it comes to the church, he organizes
and holds it together, like a head does a body.
19 So spacious is he, so roomy, that everything of
God finds its proper place in him without crowding.
20 Not only that, but all the broken and dislocated
pieces of the universe - people and things, animals
and atoms - get properly fixed and fit together in
vibrant harmonies, all because of his death, his
blood that poured down from the Cross.

LUKE 23:33-43
(The Message)
We come to the execution of Jesus. At the core of
the conversations around the cross, as Luke
records it, is a discussion about what it means to
be "King of the Jews." The crowds jeer at him to
save himself. Above his head a sign simply
declares him "King of the Jews." One of the
criminals hanging beside him mocked him, while
another took the title seriously. They were guilty,
he reasoned, but Jesus was not.
"Jesus, remember me when you come into your
kingdom." Jesus remembered him right there, in
his kingdom, and promised him paradise.33 When they got to the place called Skull Hill, they
crucified him, along with the criminals, one on his
right, the other on his left.
34 Jesus prayed, "Father, forgive them; they don't
know what they're doing."
35 The people stood there staring at Jesus, and the
ringleaders made faces, taunting, "He saved others.
Let's see him save himself! The Messiah of God - ha!
The Chosen - ha!"
36 The soldiers also came up and poked fun at him,
making a game of it. They toasted him with sour wine:
37 "So you're King of the Jews! Save yourself!"
38 Printed over him was a sign: this is the king of
the jews.
39 One of the criminals hanging alongside cursed him:
"Some Messiah you are! Save yourself! Save us!"
40 But the other one made him shut up: "Have you
no fear of God? You're getting the same as him.
41 We deserve this, but not him - he did nothing to
deserve this."
42 Then he said, "Jesus, remember me when you
enter your kingdom."
43 He said, "Don't worry, I will. Today you will join
me in paradise."
