JEREMIAH 32:1-15
(The Message)
We watch Jeremiah make a property transaction
in a besieged land doomed to conquest, as a sign
of hope for a resettlement some day. He bought
land in Jerusalem during the siege while he was in
prison. He hears about a property transaction that
is available to him, first from God, then his cousin
shows up offering the transaction. This purchase
is a sign that this land will certainly be inhabited
by descendants of its current citizens some day.1 You who sit down in the High God's presence,
spend the night in Shaddai's shadow,
2 Say this: "God, you're my refuge. I trust in you and
I'm safe!"
3 That's right - he rescues you from hidden traps,
shields you from deadly hazards.
4 His huge outstretched arms protect you - under
them you're perfectly safe; his arms fend off all harm.
5 Fear nothing - not wild wolves in the night, not flying
arrows in the day,
6 Not disease that prowls through the darkness, not
disaster that erupts at high noon.
7 Even though others succumb all around, drop like
flies right and left, no harm will ever graze you.
8 You'll stand untouched, watch it all from a distance,
watch the wicked turn into corpses.
9 Yes, because God's your refuge, the High God your
very own home,
10 Evil can't get close to you, harm can't get through
the door.
11 He ordered his angels to guard you wherever you go.
12 If you stumble, they'll catch you; their job is to keep
you from falling.
13 You'll walk unharmed among lions and snakes, and
kick young lions and serpents from the path.
14 "If you'll hold on to me for dear life," says God, "I'll
get you out of any trouble. I'll give you the best of care
if you'll only get to know and trust me.
15 Call me and I'll answer, be at your side in bad times;
I'll rescue you, then throw you a party.
16 I'll give you a long life, give you a long drink of
salvation!"

1 TIMOTHY 6:6-19
(The Message)
Paul says we are called not to pursue riches at all.
What we are to pursue are qualities of character:
"godliness, faith, love, endurance, gentleness.
Having wealth for Paul was not a moral problem.
In his culture, wealth most generally just happened,
either through inheritance or luck. That is very
different from current capitalist economics where
individuals and companies intensely and
passionately pursue it at the expense of all else.
6 A devout life does bring wealth, but it's the rich
simplicity of being yourself before God.
7 Since we entered the world penniless and will leave
it penniless,
8 if we have bread on the table and shoes on our feet,
that's enough.
9 But if it's only money these leaders are after, they
will self-destruct in no time.10 Lust for money brings trouble and nothing but
trouble. Going down that path, some lose their footing
in the faith completely and live to regret it bitterly ever
after.11 But you, Timothy, man of God: Run for your life from
all this. Pursue a righteous life - a life of wonder, faith,
love, steadiness, courtesy.
12 Run hard and fast in the faith. Seize the eternal life,
the life you were called to, the life you so fervently
embraced in the presence of so many witnesses.
13 I'm charging you before the life-giving God and
before Christ, who took his stand before Pontius Pilate
and didn't give an inch:
14 Keep this command to the letter, and don't slack off.
Our Master, Jesus Christ, is on his way.
15 He'll show up right on time, his arrival is guaranteed
by the Blessed and Undisputed Ruler, High King, High
God.
16 He's the only one death can't touch, his light so
bright no one can get close. He's never been seen by
human eyes - human eyes can't take him in! Honor to
him, and eternal rule! Oh, yes.
17 Tell those rich in this world's wealth to quit being so
full of themselves and so obsessed with money, which
is here today and gone tomorrow. Tell them to go after
God, who piles on all the riches we could ever manage -
18 to do good, to be rich in helping others, to be
extravagantly generous.
19 If they do that, they'll build a treasury that will last,
gaining life that is truly life.
LUKE 16:19-31
(The Message)
The rich man and Lazarus.
Lazarus was right there, at this man's doorstep,
on the other side of the wall for years. He was in
a totally different world from the rich man. In
God's kingdom, the hungry are fed, the naked
are clothed, the sick are cared for and healed.
If you're not doing that, and think you are
justified only by your social standing, you must
be in some fantasy kingdom.
19 "There once was a rich man, expensively dressed
in the latest fashions, wasting his days in conspicuous
consumption.
20 A poor man named Lazarus, covered with sores,
had been dumped on his doorstep.
21 All he lived for was to get a meal from scraps off
the rich man's table. His best friends were the dogs
who came and licked his sores.
22 "Then he died, this poor man, and was taken up
by the angels to the lap of Abraham. The rich man also died and was buried.
23 In hell and in torment, he looked up and saw
Abraham in the distance and Lazarus in his lap.
24 He called out, 'Father Abraham, mercy! Have
mercy! Send Lazarus to dip his finger in water to
cool my tongue. I'm in agony in this fire.'
25 "But Abraham said, 'Child, remember that in
your lifetime you got the good things and Lazarus
the bad things. It's not like that here. Here he's
consoled and you're tormented.
26 Besides, in all these matters there is a huge
chasm set between us so that no one can go from
us to you even if he wanted to, nor can anyone
cross over from you to us.'
27 "The rich man said, 'Then let me ask you, Father:
Send him to the house of my father
28 where I have five brothers, so he can tell them
the score and warn them so they won't end up here
in this place of torment.'
29 "Abraham answered, 'They have Moses and the
Prophets to tell them the score. Let them listen to
them.'
30 "'I know, Father Abraham,' he said, 'but they're not
listening. If someone came back to them from the
dead, they would change their ways.'
31 "Abraham replied, 'If they won't listen to Moses and
the Prophets, they're not going to be convinced by
someone who rises from the dead.'"

SEPTEMBER 15TH TO OCTOBER 15TH IS
DESIGNATED AS HISPANIC HERITAGE MONTH
We celebrate the rich heritage and cultural contributions
of people of the United States who trace their roots to
Spain, to Mexico, and to the Spanish-speaking countries
of Central America, South America, and the Caribbean.
The estimated Hispanic population of the United States
is over 41 million people. Most Hispanics settle in the
south and the west, but every state has a considerable
number of Hispanic persons.FUTURE FOCUS
OCTOBER 10TH — WORLD COMMUNION SUNDAYWorld Communion Sunday began as a celebration
of Protestants in the United States during the 1940s
when U.S. Protestant churches celebrated Holy
Communion very infrequently. They agreed to
celebrate and collect offerings for mission in
response to the needs following World War II.
It is used currently to provide scholarships for
U.S. racial and ethnic minorities, and international
scholarships.
