SCRIPTURE READINGS ARE:

JEREMIAH 1:4-10
The Lord calls Jeremiah as a youth to a seemingly
impossible task: "To raise up and to pull down, to
destroy and to overthrow, to build and to plant."
Babylon (Iraq today) was a major world power.
The Jews of Judah refused to see Babylon’s danger,
aided by the lies of the Chief Priest Pashur, Jeremiah
Exposes Pashur, who prophesied to the people that
everything would work out.

JEREMIAH 1:4-10 (New Living Translation)

4 The LORD gave me a message. He said,
5 "I knew you before I formed you in your mother's
womb. Before you were born I set you apart and
appointed you as my spokesman to the world."
6 "O Sovereign LORD," I said, "I can't speak for you!
I'm too young!"
7 "Don't say that," the LORD replied, "for you must go
wherever I send you and say whatever I tell you.
8 And don't be afraid of the people, for I will be with
you and take care of you. I, the LORD, have spoken!"9 Then the LORD touched my mouth and said, "See,
I have put my words in your mouth!
10 Today I appoint you to stand up against nations and
kingdoms. You are to uproot some and tear them down,
to destroy and overthrow them. You are to build others
up and plant them."

PSALM 71:1-6 (UMH 794)
(New Living Translation)
Words that could represent both Jeremiah's
and our lifelong response to God's call.

1 O LORD, you are my refuge; never let me be
disgraced.
2 Rescue me! Save me from my enemies, for you
are just. Turn your ear to listen and set me free.
3 Be to me a protecting rock of safety, where I am
always welcome. Give the order to save me, for
you are my rock and my fortress.
4 My God, rescue me from the power of the wicked,
from the clutches of cruel oppressors.
5 O Lord, you alone are my hope. I've trusted you,
O LORD, from childhood.
6 Yes, you have been with me from birth; from my
mother's womb you have cared for me. No wonder
I am always praising you!

1 CORINTHIANS 13:1-13
(New Living Translation) NLT

A poem or hymn on the love of God, which
underlies and activates every manifestation of
the Spirit in the body of Christ. The "familiarity"
of I Corinthians 13 may stand in the way of being
able to hear it. This text is often used in weddings
and the covenant of marriage. Paul is addressing a
troublesome congregation he helped to found in
Corinth. Romantic love is not what Paul is describing
here. He tells them that they are unable to manifest
the Spirit of God unless their focus as a community
is rooted in genuine love for each other. He wrote
this to help this Christian community in Corinth
get its act together.

1 If I could speak in any language in heaven or on earth
but didn't love others, I would be making meaningless
noise like a loud gong or a clanging cymbal.2 If I had the gift of prophecy, and if I knew all mysteries
of the future and knew everything about everything, but
didn't love others, what good would I be? And if I had the
gift of faith so that I could speak to a mountain and make
it move, without love I would be no good to anybody.
3 If I gave everything I have to the poor and sacrificed my
body, I could boast about it; but if I didn't love others,
I would be of no value whatsoever.
4 Love is patient and kind. Love is not jealous or boastful
or proud.
5 Love is not rude. Love does not demand its own way.
Love is not irritable, and it keeps no record of when it has
been wronged.
6 It is never glad about injustice but rejoices whenever
the truth wins out.7 Love never gives up, never loses faith, is always hopeful,
and endures through every circumstance.
8 Love will last forever, but prophecy and speaking in
unknown languages and special knowledge will disappear.
9 Now we know only a little, and even the gift of prophecy
reveals little!
10 But when the end comes, these special gifts will all
disappear.
11 It's like this: When I was a child, I spoke and thought
and reasoned as a child does. But when I grew up,
I put away childish things.12 Now we see things imperfectly as in a poor mirror,
but then we will see everything with perfect clarity. All
that I know now is partial and incomplete, but then I
will know everything completely, as God knows me now.
13 There are three things that will endure –
faith, hope, and love – and the greatest of these is love.

LUKE 4:21-36
(New International Reader's Version) NIRV

VIOLENT RESPONSE TO SERMON IN NAZARETH.
This is a message for the whole world, including
in particular Israel's historic neighboring enemies,
Lebanon and Syria. The message is for all,
including enemies, or in the end it is for no one.
There is no "most favored nation" status with
God's saving love.
That's what nearly got Jesus killed. The contagion
of rage was immediate and total. The gathering
turned from a worshiping community into a lynch
mob. Jesus had more than offended them.
He hit their "passion button" head on. They
wanted blessing for themselves but not for others.

21 He began by saying to them, "Today this passage
of Scripture is coming true as you listen."
22 Everyone said good things about him. They were
amazed at the gracious words they heard from his
lips. "Isn't this Joseph's son?" they asked.
23 Jesus said, "Here is a saying you will certainly
apply to me. 'Doctor, heal yourself! Do the things
here in your hometown that you did in Capernaum.' "
24 "What I'm about to tell you is true," he continued.
"A prophet is not accepted in his hometown.
25 I tell you for sure that there were many widows in
Israel in the days of Elijah. And there had been no
rain for three and a half years. There wasn't enough
food to eat anywhere in the land.
26 But Elijah was not sent to those widows. Instead,
he was sent to a widow in Zarephath near Sidon.
27 And there were many in Israel who had skin
diseases in the days of Elisha the prophet. But not
one of them was healed except Naaman the Syrian."
28 All the people in the synagogue were very angry
when they heard that.29 They got up and ran Jesus out of town. They took
him to the edge of the hill on which the town was built.
They planned to throw him down the cliff.
30 But Jesus walked right through the crowd and
went on his way.

LAY MINISTRY SUMMIT POSTPONED
Because of the disastrous impact of our recent ice
storm, we are rescheduling Lay Ministry Summit.
The tentative date will be Sunday, February 14th,

in Griswold. Please pencil in the date and tell all
you see of the change.

Keep in mind, the aftermath of the earthquake in
Haiti is still being played out — and will be for a very
long time. People of every nation have stepped up
in any way they can, and it is a beautiful sight.
People and supplies are swarming in as quickly as
they can, but of course it is far too late for many.
Contributions will be needed for months to come.

Thank you for all you have done for our church life and
for all you have done for people you have never known
and will never meet.

God Bless and Keep You,
Pastor Lynn
