FIRST SUNDAY AFTER CHRISTMAS DAY
COLOR: WHITE
"CAROL-SING" SERVICE TODAY.CHOOSE A FAVORITE CAROL TO SING TODAY, AND
WE WILL SING AS MANY AS WE CAN.
We are in the early days of the twelve day
celebration of “Christmastide”
(Sunset December 24 through sunset January
5, the Eve of Epiphany). The church has
historically set aside these days to celebrate
and ponder the mystery of he Incarnation, of
God becoming flesh in Jesus and dwelling
among us. As United Methodists grow into our
Full Communion with the Evangelical Lutheran
Church in America and deepen our relationships
with our interim Eucharistic Sharing partner, the
Episcopal Church, we may benefit from
remembering that this first week of Christmastide
has a particularly rich history in the worship of
these churches and in Western tradition.
SCRIPTURE READINGS ARE:
1 SAMUEL 2:18-20, 26 —
This is the story of the childhood of Samuel, raised
by a priest. He would become the last judge and
the first prophet to the kingship for Israel.
WHEN SAMUEL WAS STILL VERY YOUNG,
HANNAH GAVE HIM TO THE PRIEST, ELI, AT SHILOH.1 SAMUEL 2:18-20
18 But the boy Samuel served the Lord. He wore a sacred
linen apron.
19 Each year his mother made him a little robe. Hannah
took it to him when she went up to Shiloh with her husband.
She did it when her husband went to offer the yearly sacrifice.
20 Eli would bless Elkanah and Hannah. He would say,
"May the LORD give you children by this woman. May
they take the place of the boy you prayed for and gave
to me." Then they would go home.
1 SAMUEL 2:26
26 The boy Samuel continued to grow stronger. He also
became more and more pleasing to the LORD and to people.PSALM 148 (UMH 861)
(Today's New International Version) TNIV
All creation is called to join in praising God who has
established saving leadership for all mankind.
1 Praise the Lord. Praise the LORD from the heavens;
praise him in the heights above.
2 Praise him, all his angels; praise him, all his heavenly
hosts.3 Praise him, sun and moon; praise him, all you shining
stars.4 Praise him, you highest heavens and you waters
above the skies.
5 Let them praise the name of the Lord, for at his
command they were created,
6 and he established them for ever and ever--
e issued a decree that will never pass away.
7 Praise the LORD from the earth, you great sea
creatures and all ocean depths,8 lightning and hail, snow and clouds, stormy winds
that do his bidding,9 you mountains and all hills, fruit trees and all cedars,10 wild animals and all cattle, small creatures and
flying birds,
11 kings of the earth and all nations, you princes and
all rulers on earth,12 young men and women, old men and children.13 Let them praise the name of the Lord, for his name
alone is exalted; his splendor is above the earth and
the heavens.
14 And he has raised up for his people a horn, the praise
of all his faithful servants, of Israel, the people close
to his heart. Praise the Lord.

COLOSSIANS 3:12-17
(New International Version) NIV
The tone of Paul's moral exhortation changes to
positive as he shifts his attention from pagan
vice to Christian virtue. This shift reflects conversion
out of darkness into light. In this passage Paul
defines Christian character rather than rules to obey.
Believers are transformed into people who have the
character to do God's will. Traditional virtues illustrate
the character of holiness that grace creates in us:
compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and
patience.
12 Therefore, as God's chosen people, holy and dearly
loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness,
humility, gentleness and patience.
13 Bear with each other and forgive whatever grievances
you may have against one another. Forgive as the Lord
forgave you.
14 And over all these virtues put on love, which binds
them all together in perfect unity.
15 Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, since as
members of one body you were called to peace. And be
thankful.
16 Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly as you teach
and admonish one another with all wisdom, and as you
sing psalms, hymns and spiritual songs with gratitude in
your hearts to God.
17 And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all
in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the
Father through him.

LUKE 2:41-52
(New International Reader's Version) NIRV
The family made the annual Passover pilgrimage
to Jerusalem. Jerusalem was eighty miles from
Nazareth, so the trip would take three days. Jesus,
now "of age," stayed behind to engage in debate
with the teachers in the temple. The final verse is
a direct reference to today's reading from I Samuel.
THE BOY JESUS IN THE TEMPLE
41 Every year Jesus' parents went to Jerusalem
for the Passover Feast.
42 When he was 12 years old, they went up to the
Feast as usual.
43 After the Feast was over, his parents left to go
back home. The boy Jesus stayed behind in Jerusalem.
But they were not aware of it.
44 They thought he was somewhere in their group.
So they traveled on for a day. Then they began to look
for him among their relatives and friends.
45 They did not find him. So they went back to
Jerusalem to look for him.
46 After three days they found him in the temple
courtyard. He was sitting with the teachers. He was
listening to them and asking them questions.47 Everyone who heard him was amazed at how much
he understood. They also were amazed at his answers.
48 When his parents saw him, they were amazed. His
mother said to him, "Son, why have you treated us like
this? Your father and I have been worried about you. We
have been looking for you everywhere."
49 "Why were you looking for me?" he asked. "Didn't
you know I had to be in my Father's house?"
50 But they did not understand what he meant by that.
51 Then he went back to Nazareth with them, and he
obeyed them. But his mother kept all these things like
a secret treasure and pondered them in her heart.
52 Jesus became wiser and stronger. He also became
more and more pleasing to God and to people.
