THIS IS INGATHERING DAY
Remember those who worked so hard to make
this happen 30 years ago!
CONGRATULATIONS TO ALL OF YOU who have
been involved with THANKSGIVING INGATHERING
all these years. The Task Force is proud to report a
grand total of $922,555 as of December 2008. This
grand number, is the giving of both cash and kits.
Who can even begin to guess how much United
Methodists gave for local tornado and flood relief?
We know that countless cash offerings, cleaning
supplies, flood buckets, food, clothing, and
numerous other items were shared through the
generosity of United Methodists. THANK YOU ALL!
We took a brief survey and our younger people
admitted they hadn't heard much about "Ingathering."
Perhaps we need to discuss it throughout the year.
Our focus is very wide, as you can see. Here is
Bishop Trimble cutting the ribbon for the Cedar Rapids
"Block X Block" project. This is the traveling Tool Trailer they use to restore homes
to livability. This is the first home that was finished in the project.Iowans went to Nigeria for "Iowa Nigeria Partnership"
this year. Many of our layettes and school kits went
there. This sewing machine went to a school in Nigeria.
Water is a precious treasure there and if a well can be
repaired, it will make a drastic difference in the lives of
the community. A solar panel was installed on a clinic roof so that they
might have refrigeration there. The list of projects is endless, but if you think nothing is
happening, you would be very wrong.
Those who developed this project deserve a huge
“THANK YOU” for the God-given inspiration to begin
this amazing mission that has touched so many around
the world.

RUTH 3:1-5; 4:13-17
New International Version (NIV)
Naomi guides Ruth through the customs of
Hebrew culture to enable her to find a husband,
home, and children. In this way, Ruth becomes
the great grandmother of Israel's future king, David.
Ruth and Boaz at the Threshing Floor
1 One day Naomi her mother-in-law said to her,
"My daughter, should I not try to find a home for you,
where you will be well provided for?
2 Is not Boaz, with whose servant girls you have been,
a kinsman of ours? Tonight he will be winnowing barley
on the threshing floor.3 Wash and perfume yourself, and put on your best
clothes. Then go down to the threshing floor, but don't
let him know you are there until he has finished eating
and drinking.
4 When he lies down, note the place where he is lying.
Then go and uncover his feet and lie down. He will tell
you what to do."5 "I will do whatever you say," Ruth answered.
RUTH 4:13-17
The Genealogy of David13 So Boaz took Ruth and she became his wife.
Then he went to her, and the LORD enabled her
to conceive, and she gave birth to a son.
14 The women said to Naomi: "Praise be to the LORD,
who this day has not left you without a kinsman-redeemer.
May he become famous throughout Israel!
15 He will renew your life and sustain you in your old age.
For your daughter-in-law, who loves you and who is better
to you than seven sons, has given him birth."
16 Then Naomi took the child, laid him in her lap and
cared for him.17 The women living there said, "Naomi has a son."
And they named him Obed.
He was the father of Jesse, who was
the father of David.

PSALM 127
New International Version (NIV)
Verses 1-2 focus on the emptiness of life without
trust in God's presence and provision. Verses
3-5 speak of the blessing of having children.
The theme that binds these two together is the
term "house" in verse 1, taken figuratively in the
second part to refer to a "household."
A SONG OF ASCENTS
1 Unless the LORD builds the house,
its builders labor in vain.
Unless the LORD watches over the city,
the watchmen stand guard in vain.
2 In vain you rise early
and stay up late,
toiling for food to eat—
for he grants sleep to those he loves.
3 Sons are a heritage from the LORD,
children a reward from him.4 Like arrows in the hands of a warrior
are sons born in one's youth.
5 Blessed is the man
whose quiver is full of them.
They will not be put to shame
when they contend with their enemies in the gate.

HEBREWS 9:24-28
New International Reader's Version (NIRV)
Christ entered into heaven itself, offering himself
once for all to remove sin, not merely "cover" it
(the word translated "atonement" in Hebrew means
"cover"). Christ will be seen at the judgment to acquit
those who have eagerly waited for him. Sin would
still have been upon us, and have had dominion over
us; but Jesus Christ, by one sacrifice, has destroyed
the works of the devil, that believers may be made
righteous, holy.
24 Christ did not enter a sacred tent made by people.
That tent was only a copy of the true one. He entered
heaven itself. He did it to stand in front of God for us.
He is there right now.
25 The high priest enters the Most Holy Room every
year. He enters with blood that is not his own. But
Christ did not enter heaven to offer himself again
and again.
26 If he had, he would have had to suffer many times
since the world was created. But now he has
appeared once and for all time. He has come at the
end of the ages to do away with sin. He has done
that by offering himself.
27 People have to die once. After that, God will
judge them.
28 In the same way, Christ was offered up once.
He took away the sins of many people. He will also
come a second time. At that time he will not suffer
for sin. Instead, he will come to bring salvation to
those who are waiting for him.

MARK 12:38-44
New International Reader's Version (NIRV)
The story of the "widow's mite" comes immediately
after warnings by Jesus about the "home-devouring"
practices of the scribes who were expected to use
the temple treasury funds to support widows and
orphans, but used it to support their own lavish
lifestyles instead. That is why the widow has only a
penny to give, but also why she gives it all — that
perhaps others might still be helped, even if
meagerly, by what she can offer.
THE WIDOW'S MITE
38 As he taught, he said, "Watch out for the
teachers of the law. They like to walk around in long
robes. They like to be greeted in the market places.
39 They love to have the most important seats in the
synagogues. They also love to have the places of
honor at dinners.
40 They take over the houses of widows. They say
long prayers to show off. God will punish those men
very much."
THE WIDOW'S OFFERING
41 Jesus sat down across from the place where
people put their temple offerings. He watched the
crowd putting their money into the offering boxes.
Many rich people threw large amounts into them.
42 But a poor widow came and put in two very small
copper coins. They were worth less than a penny.43 Jesus asked his disciples to come to him. He
said, "What I'm about to tell you is true. That poor
widow has put more into the offering box than all
the others combined.
44 They all gave a lot because they are rich. But she
gave even though she is poor. She put in everything
she had. She gave all she had to live on."
