RAGBRAI IS HAPPENING THIS WEEK.
Greenfield is working hard to be ready for 20,000
cyclists Monday night. It is a completely unique
experience — marginally controlled madness. Many of us have friends and family who take part
in this every year. They say it is very hard work,
and they would not miss it.THIS IS NO SISSY SPORT.

2 SAMUEL 11:1-15
NEW INTERNATIONAL VERSION (NIV)
Observe occasions of David's sin; what led to it.
1. Neglect of his business. He tarried at Jerusalem.
When we are out of the way of our duty, we are
tempted.
2. Love of ease: idleness gives great advantage to
a tempter. Boredom precipitates many absurd
schemes. Keep in mind there are cultures even today
where a man takes as many wives as he can afford.
DAVID AND BATHSHEBA
1 In the spring, at the time when kings go off to war,
David sent Joab out with the king's men and the
whole Israelite army. They destroyed the Ammonites
and besieged Rabbah. But David remained in Jerusalem.
2 One evening David got up from his bed and walked
around on the roof of the palace. From the roof he saw
a woman bathing. The woman was very beautiful,
3 and David sent someone to find out about her. The
man said, "Isn't this Bathsheba, the daughter of Eliam
and the wife of Uriah the Hittite?"
4 Then David sent messengers to get her. She came to
him, and he slept with her. (She had purified herself
from her uncleanness.) Then she went back home.
5 The woman conceived and sent word to David,
saying, "I am pregnant."
6 So David sent this word to Joab: "Send me Uriah the
Hittite." And Joab sent him to David.
7 When Uriah came to him, David asked him how Joab
was, how the soldiers were and how the war was going.
8 Then David said to Uriah, "Go down to your house and
wash your feet." So Uriah left the palace, and a gift from
the king was sent after him.
9 But Uriah slept at the entrance to the palace with all his
master's servants and did not go down to his house.
10 When David was told, "Uriah did not go home," he
asked him, "Haven't you just come from a distance?
Why didn't you go home?"
11 Uriah said to David, "The ark and Israel and Judah
are staying in tents, and my master Joab and my lord's
men are camped in the open fields. How could I go to
my house to eat and drink and lie with my wife? As
surely as you live, I will not do such a thing!"
12 Then David said to him, "Stay here one more day,
and tomorrow I will send you back." So Uriah remained
in Jerusalem that day and the next.
13 At David's invitation, he ate and drank with him,
and David made him drunk. But in the evening Uriah
went out to sleep on his mat among his master's
servants; he did not go home.
14 In the morning David wrote a letter to Joab and
sent it with Uriah.
15 In it he wrote, "Put Uriah in the front line where
the fighting is fiercest. Then withdraw from him so he
will be struck down and die.

PSALM 14
NEW LIVING TRANSLATION (NLT)
A cry for deliverance for God's people from corruption
all around. A fool hath said in his heart, There is no
God. This sinner is a fool; he is simple and unwise,
and this is evidence of it: he is wicked and profane,
and this is the cause.
A PSALM OF DAVID
1 Only fools say in their hearts,
“There is no God.”
They are corrupt, and their actions are evil;
not one of them does good!
2 The Lord looks down from heaven
on the entire human race;
he looks to see if anyone is truly wise,
if anyone seeks God.
3 But no, all have turned away;
all have become corrupt.
No one does good,
not a single one!
4 Will those who do evil never learn?
They eat up my people like bread
and wouldn’t think of praying to the Lord.
5 Terror will grip them,
for God is with those who obey him.
6 The wicked frustrate the plans of the oppressed,
but the Lord will protect his people.
7 Who will come from Mount Zion to rescue Israel?
When the Lord restores his people,
Jacob will shout with joy, and Israel will rejoice.

EPHESIANS 3:14-21
NEW LIVING TRANSLATION (NLT)
PAUL asks for spiritual blessings, strength from
the Spirit of God in the inner man; strength in the
soul; the strength of faith, to serve God, and to
do his duty.
PAUL'S PRAYER FOR SPIRITUAL GROWTH
14 When I think of all this, I fall to my knees and
pray to the Father,
15 the Creator of everything in heaven and on earth.
16 I pray that from his glorious, unlimited resources
he will empower you with strength through his Spirit.
17 Then Christ will make his home in your heart as you
trust in him. Your roots will grow down into God’s love
and keep you strong.
18 And may you have the power to understand, as all
God’s people should, how wide, how long, how high,
and how deep his love is.
19 May you experience the love of Christ, though it is
too great to understand fully. Then you will be made
complete with all the fullness of life and power that
comes from God.
20 Now all glory to God, who is able, through his
mighty power at work within us, to accomplish
infinitely more than we might ask or think.
21 Glory to him in the church and in Christ Jesus
through all generations forever and ever! Amen.

JOHN 6:1-21 NEW LIVING TRANSLATION (NLT)
John relates the miracle of feeding the multitude.
JESUS FEEDS THE 5,000
1 After this, Jesus crossed over to the far side of the
Sea of Galilee, also known as the Sea of Tiberias.
2 A huge crowd kept following him wherever he went,
because they saw his miraculous signs as he healed
the sick.
3 Then Jesus climbed a hill and sat down with his
disciples around him.
4 (It was nearly time for the Jewish Passover celebration.)
5 Jesus soon saw a huge crowd of people coming to
look for him. Turning to Philip, he asked, “Where can we
buy bread to feed all these people?”
6 He was testing Philip, for he already knew what he was
going to do.
7 Philip replied, “Even if we worked for months, we wouldn’t
have enough money to feed them!”
8 Then Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, spoke up.
9 “There’s a young boy here with five barley loaves and
two fish. But what good is that with this huge crowd?”
10 “Tell everyone to sit down,” Jesus said. So they all sat
down on the grassy slopes.
(The men alone numbered about 5,000.)11 Then Jesus took the loaves, gave thanks to God, and
distributed them to the people. Afterward he did the same
with the fish. And they all ate as much as they wanted.
12 After everyone was full, Jesus told his disciples,
“Now gather the leftovers, so that nothing is wasted.”
13 So they picked up the pieces and filled twelve baskets
with scraps left by the people who had eaten from the
five barley loaves.
14 When the people saw him do this miraculous sign,
they exclaimed, “Surely, he is the Prophet we have been
expecting!”
15 When Jesus saw that they were ready to force him
to be their king, he slipped away into the hills by himself.
JESUS WALKS ON WATER
Here were Christ's disciples, and Christ was praying
for them; yet they were in distress. There may be
perils and afflictions, where there is interest in Christ.
Clouds and darkness often surround the children of
the light and of the day. They see Jesus walking on
the sea. Even the approaches of comfort and
deliverance often are so mistaken, as to become the
occasions of fear. Nothing is more powerful to
convince sinners than the words, "I am Jesus whom
thou persecutest;" to nothing more powerful to
comfort saints than this,
" I am Jesus whom thou lovest."
16 That evening Jesus’ disciples went down to the
shore to wait for him.
17 But as darkness fell and Jesus still hadn’t come
back, they got into the boat and headed across the
lake toward Capernaum.
18 Soon a gale swept down upon them, and the
sea grew very rough.
19 They had rowed three or four miles when suddenly
they saw Jesus walking on the water toward the boat.
They were terrified,
20 but he called out to them, “Don’t be afraid. I am here!”21 Then they were eager to let him in the boat, and
immediately they arrived at their destination!

Since our squad is scattered at this point, perhaps we
can revisit some old familiar turf. This is an update on
GREG MORTENSON, who has undertaken to squelch
the Taliban in Afghanistan and Pakistan. If anyone
doubts that a person can absolutely vanish in this
part of the world, look at a small part of the local mountain
range.Pushghar, Afghanistan
By Three-time Pulitzer Prize Winner,
THOMAS L. FRIEDMAN / The New York Times
I came to Afghanistan and asked: Why are we here?
Who cares about the Taliban? Al Qaeda is gone.
And if its leaders come back, well, that’s why we
created cruise missiles.
I cannot write that column . . . something stills
my hand. This week I watched Greg Mortenson,
founder of the Central Asia Institute and famed
author of “Three Cups of Tea,” open one of his
SCHOOLS FOR GIRLS in this remote AFGHAN
VILLAGE in the HINDU KUSH mountains.
After witnessing the delight in the faces of those
little Afghan girls crowded three to a desk
waiting to learn, I found it impossible to write,
“Let’s get out of here.”
Mortenson’s efforts remind us what the “war on
terrorism” is about. It’s about the war of ideas
within Islam — a war between religious zealots
who glorify martyrdom and want to keep Islam
untouched by change and isolated from education,
and it's women disempowered, and those who
want to embrace education, open Islam to new
ideas and empower Muslim women as much as
men. America’s invasions of Iraq and Afghanistan
were partly an effort to allow Muslim progressives
to win so that the real engine of change — a new
generation — can be educated and raised in
enlightenment.
Admiral Mike Mullen, the U.S. chairman of the Joint
Chiefs of Staff, spent half a day reaching Mortenson’s
newest school to cut the ribbon. Our Chinook helicopter
threaded its way between mountain peaks, from
Kabul up through the Panjshir Valley, before landing
in a cloud of dust at the village of Pushghar. Imagine
a new, one-story school on the moon, then you’ll
appreciate the rocky desolateness of this landscape.
There, was Mortenson, dressed in traditional Afghan
garb. He was surrounded by bearded village elders
and scores of young Afghan boys and girls, who were
fascinated with the helicopter, and not quite believing
that America’s “warrior chief” — as Admiral Mullen’s
title was loosely translated into Urdu — had come to
open the new school. The admiral passed out
notebooks to the children and Mortenson told me why
he has devoted his life to building 131 secular schools
for girls in Pakistan and another 48 in Afghanistan:
“This is money extremely well invested. These are
schools that will bring a new generation of kids that will
have a broader, unrestricted view of the world. We focus
on areas where there is no education.
RELIGIOUS EXTREMISM FLOURISHES
IN AREAS OF ISOLATION AND RESTRICTION.
“When a girl gets educated here and then becomes a
mother, she is much less likely to let her son become
a militant or insurgent,” he added. “And she will have
fewer children. When a girl learns how to read and write,
one of the first things she does is teach her own mother.
The girls bring home meat and vegetables, wrapped in
newspapers, and the mother will ask the girl to read the
newspaper to her and they learn about the world and
about women who are exploited.”
It is no accident, Mortenson noted, that since 2007, the
Taliban and its allies have bombed, burned or shut down
more than 640 schools in Afghanistan and 350 schools
in Pakistan, of which about 80 percent are schools for
girls. This valley, controlled by Tajik fighters, is secure,
but down south in Helmand Province, where the worst
fighting is today, the Deputy Minister of Education said
that Taliban extremists have shut 75 of the 228 schools
in the last year. This is the real war. The Taliban want
mosques, not schools.
"MUSLIM MILITANTS RECRUIT CHILDREN AMONG
THE ILLITERATE AND IMPOVERISHED IN SOCIETY,
SO EDUCATION IS A FORMIDABLE ENEMY. IF
EDUCATION THRIVES, THE TALIBAN IS OUT OF
BUSINESS," SAID MORTENSEN.
This new school teaches grades one through six. I asked
some girls through an interpreter what they wanted to be
when they grow up: “Teacher,” shouted one. “Doctor,”
shouted another. Living here, those are the only two
educated role models these girls encounter. Where were
they going to school before Mortenson’s Central Asia
Institute and the U.S. State Department joined with the
village elders to get this secular public school built?
“The mosque,” the girls said.
Mortenson said he was originally critical of the U.S. military
in Iraq and Afghanistan, but he’s changed his mind: “The
U.S. military has gone through a dramatic learning curve.
They really get it now. It’s all about building relationships
from the ground up, listening more and serving the
people of Afghanistan.”
When you see little Afghan girls crouched on the front
steps of their new school, clutching tightly with both
arms the notebooks handed to them by a U.S. admiral
— as if they were their first dolls — one cannot say:
“Let’s just walk away.” Not yet . . . . not yet.I am of a generation that is accustomed to watching
problems solved in one hour, prime time. We see this
middle east solution is often times three steps forward
and two steps back. I know Mr. Mortenson's life has
been threatened many times, and yet he pushes on.
That takes a very special person.
(Remind you of anyone?)
God Bless and Keep You,
Pastor Lynn
